Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

Salary Range

$125,600.00 – $207,200.00

What Is the Opportunity?

The mission of Corporate Legal Operations at Travelers is to drive operational excellence for effective and efficient delivery of legal expertise to our business partners. The Corporate Legal Operations team has responsibility for a wide range of operational tasks and initiatives that support Legal Services and its Senior Leadership Team, including strategic planning and execution, outside counsel and vendor management, technology enablement and adoption, data and analytics, workflow automation and process improvement, and communications and event strategy for Legal Services. As Director, Corporate Legal Operations, you will drive execution across many of these functional responsibilities, including leading others to ensure that Corporate Legal Operations is efficiently and effectively delivering and executing on projects, tasks and initiatives. You will be key in creating processes and practices to improve the day-to-day efficiency and effectiveness in legal, facilitate change, and control costs. With superb communication skills, you will maintain and continue to develop collaborative relationships with our key organizational partners in Finance, Human Resources, and Technology. You will foster and maintain a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, flawless execution, and impeccable customer service in providing operational support to Corporate and BU legal groups with respect to their operational requirements.

  • Assist with refining and developing the Corporate Legal Operations strategic plan
  • Drive execution on strategic plan for Corporate Legal Operations, including managing and overseeing projects, tasks and initiatives
  • Lead outside counsel management efforts, including recommending strategy and approach to outside counsel management efforts, overseeing competitive bidding, enabling development and improvement of outside counsel relationships with key law firms, providing guidance on law firm pricing and alternative fee arrangements, and planning and preparing for law firm business review meetings
  • Manage legal ebilling
  • In partnership with finance, procurement, and legal technology, manage vendor relationships for corporate legal, including advising on strategy, utilization, renewals, requests for proposals and pricing
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes in Legal Services and lead efforts to implement new processes, changes, or improvements
  • Develop and refine metrics and dashboards in support of Legal Services data and analytics strategy for Corporate and BU Legal groups
  • Collaborate with Legal Technology team to assess, monitor, and implement technology solutions to optimize legal performance, including through matter management, ebilling, and other technology systems
  • Review and assess adoption of legal technology tools and applications to ensure appropriate utilization and identify opportunities for improved use and deployment of technology
  • In partnership with Legal Technology team, consistently and periodically review and assess automated workflows in production and provide guidance to legal groups on refining, updating or changing those workflows
  • Plan, prepare for and deliver effective communications and presentations to appropriate audiences regarding strategy, process, outcomes, or other operational initiatives as needed
  • Manage Business and Cyber Resiliency processes for Corporate Legal groups and ensure collaboration and consistency with BU and Claim Legal groups, as appropriate
  • Maintain awareness of legal operations and industry trends and advise on needed upgrades and improvements to business processes and tools
  • May manage a limited number of staff

What does the ideal candidate have?

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 10+ years of experience as a legal administrator or operations manager or comparable legal administration and/or management
  • Forward thinker with the ability to bring industry best practices to the table in a fast-paced and evolving environment
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to connect business priorities and goals to Legal Services and Corporate Legal Operations strategic plans
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage change and develop employees
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence and interact with all levels of the organization, specifically including drafting written communications, artfully managing interpersonal communications, and delivering high quality presentations
  • Action, execution, and solution-oriented with analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Outstanding organizational skills and a track record of managing complex tasks or projects with multiple priorities and high visibility
  • Innovation mindset
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Familiarity with law firm pricing, fee arrangements and/or legal billing
  • Ability to understand how legal groups and their processes interact and connect with each other
  • Willingness and desire to learn new things and apply that knowledge to the job effectively

What is a must have?

  • 6+ years in legal operations, legal administration, or operations/administration in a comparable field
  • Exceptional Microsoft Office 365 skills, particularly PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and MS Word
