Compensation Overview
The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

$142,100.00 – $234,400.00

What Is the Opportunity?
The Product Development and Coverage analysis group in Legal Shared Services is responsible for providing legal advice on policy form development and related coverage issues for the underwriting units across the enterprise. The Sr. Counsel position handles complex legal matters (insurance coverage analysis and policy forms/endorsement review) requiring an established degree of knowledge and expertise. Prior claim or coverage analysis experience with a focus on Management Liability and Professional Liability coverages is preferable.
Counsel and advice must be both preventive and of a problem-solving nature, in order to enable the company to take full advantage of its legal rights, privileges and opportunities, and to minimize the company’s exposure to legal action. Counsel and advice must involve technical precision in, and consistent adherence to, insurance policy drafting conventions and wording standards. Other responsibilities as assigned. The Sr. Counsel role may manage a limited number of support staff.
What Will You Do?
- Provides counsel to senior management on complex legal issues within a respective line of business or practice area – Insurance Coverage, including product development and legal analysis for underwriting business units, with a focus on Management Liability and Professional Liability coverages provided by our Bond & Specialty Insurance (B&SI) segment (preferable).
- Negotiates with clients or management and/or attempts to influence leaders at all levels regarding matters of significance to the legal community.
- Researches legal principles and precedents within area of specialization or expertise.
- Proactively identifies and communicates risk to internal and/or external customers and provides recommendations on how to mitigate that risk.
- Drafts, negotiates and executes legal documents.
- Maintains awareness of external judicial climate and legal developments.
- Builds and maintains strong internal and external client relationships.
- Acts as a mentor and coach to less senior attorneys and/or paralegal/staff.
- Makes effective use of technology and automation in the practice of law.
- This role acts as an individual contributor.
- Work in tandem with Business Unit lawyers and the Legal Shared Services team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
- Minimum of 10 years of prior legal experience preferred.
- Proficient at researching coverage related legal issues.
- Prior claim or coverage analysis experience with first-party and liability coverages preferred.
- Background in Bond & Specialty Insurance Management Liability and Professional Liability .
- In-house or law firm experience providing coverage advice, or litigating matters, regarding commercial insurance products preferred.
- Strong analytical, communications, and writing skills preferred.
What is a Must Have?
- Juris Doctorate or equivalent International legal degree; graduate of an accredited law school.
- Minimum of 7 years of prior legal experience.
- Active license to practice law in the state(s) in which representation is required.
