The City of Surprise City Attorney’s Office is seeking a civil attorney who desires to be a part of a small (six attorneys fully-staffed), tightknit municipal law office of professionals whose experience, skill, and talent complement each other. When possible, attorneys are assigned specific departments and/or areas of legal practice based on the attorney’s interests and preferences, but may be called upon to perform legal work across the spectrum of legal matters in which cities engage. We are looking for an attorney who will appreciate the challenge of assisting a city client in achieving its objectives in diverse legal matters through creative, yet sound legal advice.
PLEASE NOTE:
There are two open positions available.
Depending on the qualifications met, candidates may be considered for one of three job titles :
– Assistant City Attorney,
– Assistant City Attorney-Senior or
– Deputy City Attorney
Job Title: ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY
Salary Range: $99,888.88 – $114,852.14 Annually
SUMMARY
Incumbents perform duties with minimal supervision. Incumbents advise staff and public officials on legal matters, applying in-depth knowledge and experience to successfully resolve a wide variety of City issues in areas of law such as land use and development, contracts, labor and employment, and litigation. Incumbents also review and draft a variety of legal documents and attend various City and community meetings
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Juris Doctor
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must be a member of the State Bar of Arizona and possess a current and active license to practice law in the State of Arizona; both are required by the commencement of the position and both must be maintained while in the position.

HERE – ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY
Job Title: ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY- SENIOR
Salary Range: $112,264.88 – $149,637.80 Annually
SUMMARY
Incumbents perform duties with minimal supervision. Incumbents advise staff and public officials on legal matters, applying in-depth knowledge and experience to successfully resolve a wide variety of City issues in areas of law such as land use and development, contracts, labor and employment, and litigation. Incumbents also review and draft a variety of legal documents and attend various City and community meetings.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Juris Doctor and at least five years related legal experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Additional education cannot be substituted for experience.

Must be a member of the State Bar of Arizona and possess a current and active license to practice law in the State of Arizona.

Job Title: DEPUTY CITY ATTORNEY
Salary Range: $126,081.54 – $174,296.20 Annually
SUMMARY
Incumbents perform duties with minimal supervision. Incumbents advise staff and public officials on legal matters, applying in-depth knowledge and experience to successfully resolve a wide variety of City issues in areas of law such as land use and development, contracts, labor and employment, and litigation. Incumbents also review and draft a variety of legal documents and attend various City and community meetings.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Juris Doctor and 10 years of relevant legal experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Additional education cannot be substituted for experience.

Must possess a current and active license to practice law in the State of Arizona.
