Position Summary
Plans, organizes, supervises work activities, and monitors the progress of the work performed in assigned areas of responsibility. Manages the care, maintenance and renovation of all athletic fields and grounds. Establishes the landscaping and maintenance schedules, procedures and goals for the athletic fields, turf, and general grounds at the athletic complexes in the City. Provides direction and guidance to ballfield staff regarding schedule, procedure, and safety.

Work Hours: Monday-Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm
Essential Functions

  • Communicate with Athletic Supervisor, Park Operations Supervisor and Park Operations Manager to provide a clear report on ballfield conditions and needs. Should also provide suggestions and recommendations to Park Operations Supervisor.
  • Performs supervisory functions in assigned areas of responsibility. Sets schedules, organizes, and monitors progress of work crews.
  • Adheres to personnel, safety and department policies and procedures. Provides recommendations and helps document standard operating procedures for athletic field operations.
  • Makes recommendations and purchases equipment, tools, and materials for the operations of sports field maintenance.
  • Monitors the application of herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers, and various other chemicals on all athletics and sports fields.
  • Informs Park Operations Supervisor of any potential hazards, issues, problem areas, public inquiries, and the status of all work-related activities.
  • Assists other crews, coworkers and city departments as needed.
  • Performs the duties of all Sports Field personnel as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs regular park inspections to ensure adequate maintenance programs are being performed and coordinates timely playgrounds inspections and audits.
  • Supervises and coordinates private contractors doing work for the City in assigned area of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • 3 years experience in Sports field operations or golf course operations, including 2 years experience in supervising crews.
  • Any combination of related, education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of turf, landscape, irrigation, sports field maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of pest management guidelines and rules from Texas Department of Agriculture and turf management guidelines and standards from certified agencies.
  • Knowledge of safe operation and care of light to heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety operation and procedures.
  • Knowledge of budget and financial procedures.

Skills

  • Skill in use of personal computer including Microsoft Office, Open Office or similar word processing programs, e-mail and the internet.
  • Must possess and exhibit skills necessary to operate assigned tools and equipment in a safe and proper manner and to teach these skills to crew members.
  • Must possess skills in personnel supervision, training, and in coordinating operations for Park’s maintenance.

Special Requirements

  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver’s License Class “C” and good driving record as defined by City policy.
  • Must Possess a TDA Non-Commercial Political Subdivision Applicator License in 3A (Landscape Maintenance)
  • Must Possess a TDA Non-Commercial Political Subdivision Applicator License in 12 (Public Health Pest Control).
  • Certified Professional Turfgrass Manager from the Texas Turf Association must be obtained within one year of employment.
  • Certified Professional Turfgrass Manager from the Texas Turf Association preferred.
