General Description
The Orange County Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks and Recreation (DEAPR) has an opening for a Recreation Program Assistant. This position performs paraprofessional work assisting in organizing and conducting recreation, sports, cultural, and leisure activities for DEAPR. Work may include: assisting with developing, planning, and evaluating activities and events; providing basic skill instruction; performing cash handling procedures, commodities and maintaining records, directing group activities; and maintaining facilities, equipment and supplies. Work may include participating in the activities with participants, training staff, assisting with hiring staff, purchasing equipment, communicating with school officials, partner organizations, staff and family members/caretakers. Work may require use of point of sale terminals or cash registers. May supervise and direct the work of Facility Assistants, Camp Counselors and volunteers. Under the regular supervision of the Recreation Superintendent and functionally supervised by the Recreation Manager. Position’s work schedule routinely requires weekend and evening shifts.

This position will provide event management at the Soccer.com Center during 16 tournaments annually. Event management includes coordination with Fire, EMS, and Police on emergency action plans; acting as liaison with tournament sponsoring organizations; execution of parking plans with school representatives and tournament organizers; supervision of the usage and maintenance of tournament related equipment, i.e. tents, tables, and County owned/operated restroom and concession trailers.
Provides assistance, direction, and information to program participants and facility users in person and via telephone;
Supports the implementation of 80 summer camp programs for approximately 1,800 annual enrollments and accounting for $100,000 in Division revenues, the Divisions mandated health and medication policy adopted by the County’s Risk Manager, and management of the FSA collaborative summer camp with the Orange County Health Department, Orange County Schools, and DEAPR at New Hope Elementary School.
Supports the implementation of 10 annual special events through equipment management and maintenance; collaboration with community partners and sponsors; coordination with Fire, EMS, and Police on emergency action plans; orientation and supervision of community member volunteers leading up to and during events.
Serves as departmental point of contract for gathering supplies and equipment for all countywide special events;
Replaces, repairs, and inventories recreation supplies and equipment;
Monitors cleanliness of all areas and condition of equipment and supplies; orders supplies and equipment;
Maintains safety of equipment; provides set up and break down of program/activities;
Maintains compliance with operational standards and facility procedures;
Makes recommendations regarding operational procedures, equipment and supply purchase, facility improvements, activity fees, program assessment, and facility use guidelines;
Provides leadership and guidance to temporary and part-time Facility Assistants;
Counts and disseminates flyers and promotional materials for all Recreation Department to schools, local businesses, and agencies;
Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as special event equipment lists, safety and cleaning checklists, program procedures and policy changes, equipment reservation requests, and reservation permits;
Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as monthly report, safety/cleaning inspection worksheet, field trip schedules for all age groups, monthly attendance sheets, and incident and accident reports;
Refers to reservation permits, equipment rental requests forms, special event equipment lists, roster sheets, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.;
Operates a variety of vehicles such as van, bus, etc., and a variety of equipment and machinery such as computer, printer, etc.;
Uses a variety of tools such as basic tool kit, etc.; a variety of supplies such as arts and crafts supplies, special event supplies, game equipment, general office supplies, etc.; and a variety of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Excel, etc.;
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as, temporary Facility Assistants, Administrative staff, supervisors of various Recreation Departments, other agencies, and the general public;
Performs general clerical duties as required, including preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, attending meetings, etc.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Recreation Services Division of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Recreation Program Assistant;

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma and one (1) year of experience in recreation programming.
This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule; which will include days, nights, and weekends.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
