The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a Certified Playground Safety Inspector to work within the Southern Region Parks Division. The Certified Playground Safety Inspector functions independently and as a team when performing assigned tasks and is expected to effectively problem solve situations within the parameters of designated job duties. The CertifiedPlayground Safety Inspector must possess and utilize specialized knowledge and skills in the maintenance, operation areas, as well as exhibit strong oral and written communication techniques, computer/tablet and smartphone competency, organizational abilities, and problem solving skills.
Under the general direction of the Park Superintendent, performs inspection of Prince George’s County playgrounds in various locations such as parks, park facilities and community centers. The incumbent may be required to work extra hours, overtime and report to work on a callback basis as needed to include weekends.
Please Note: The salary range listed above represents the earning potential for this position. The budgeted salary range for this position is $42,112 – $58,347. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Document Control
- Utilize Excel, SharePoint, OneDrive and Access Database skills to organize, record and file all documents received by the division
- Review and process all documents in a highly confidential and organized manner.

- Plans and conducts routine preventive maintenance program for play equipment. Performs safety inspections to discover structural problems and other defects, determines needed repairs, and implements corrective action. Makes minor repairs and replacements (e.g., swings, S-hooks, chains, etc.). Disables or removes defective equipment as required. Makes recommendations on closing and removing major equipment.
- Prepares records of inspections and completed repairs. Estimates materials and supplies needed, and selects and purchases all repair and replacement parts. Submits annual budget request. Receives shipments of supplies and keeps stock inventory.
- Provides training for Commission employees and other groups in the various safety considerations in play equipment selection, installation, and maintenance as needed. Designs, prepares, and presents play equipment safety workshops as needed. Reviews specialized literature to keep up with current design trends.
- Ability to work with highly confidential documents and data while ensuring confidentiality.
- Superb written, verbal, organizational and interpersonal skills. Proficient in office software (MS Office), enterprise software and specialized software for planning, scheduling, communicating (email), word processing, collecting and reporting data (Access Database), preparing presentations, and researching (Internet).
- Have excellent English language skills in both reading and writing and be able to understand item specifications, artwork, inspection criteria and requirements, inspection standards and tolerance, and quality control checklists.
- Be able to accurately document your findings and prepare written inspection reports.
- Must be observant and detail oriented, with a logical approach to their work.
- Maintain the highest level of integrity when conducting business on behalf of the organization.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High school or GED, including or supplemented by at least three courses in construction technology, engineering, or related subjects; two years of general trades experience; and two years experience in playground equipment repair and installation; or
2. An equivalent combination of four years education and experience.
3. Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.
4. Valid drivers license, or the ability to acquire one.
Supplemental Information
Class/Specification Title: Play Equipment Safety Specialist
Preferred candidates will have knowledge of: principles and fundamentals of park and playground inspections and maintenance; accepted practices in athletic field preparation, maintenance, construction and renovation; pests and diseases and use of pesticides for the control thereof; basic record keeping; snow removal, principles and techniques of public relations.
Preferred candidates will have the ability to: communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; deal firmly and tactfully with contractors; maintain effective relationships with M-NCPPC staff and the public.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATES
License: Possession of a valid Maryland driver’s license and an acceptable driver’s record may be required. Current Certified Playground Safety Inspector.
