About the Position
The County of San Luis Obispo is offering a rare opportunity for a Supervising Legal Clerk to join the Department of Social Services.
The Department of Social Services provides public services that promote self-sufficiency, health and well-being. These programs help ensure the protection of children, the elderly and dependent adults and provide a safety net for individuals and families who need assistance with basic necessities, such as food, housing and health care.
The Supervising Legal Clerk I (SLCI) position is non-supervisory and works under general supervision of the Supervising Legal Clerk II (SLCII). The SLCI serves as a technical subject matter expert, trains, mentors, and is the Lead Worker for junior staff. The position independently performs and leads the most complex and specialized assignments and projects and has considerable latitude for independent judgment and action.
It is expected that the SLCI will have knowledge of elements of supervision, as the position may act in said capacity during the absence of the SLCII. The SLCI will model positive team behaviors and promote teamwork, assist in planning, organizing, and assigning work, while considering factors such as the processing requirements and the impact on the unit, and assist in reviewing and updating of unit procedures and desk guides. The SLCI will attend meetings as requested and/or needed.
Under direction, performs specialized clerical work of a legal nature where the majority of tasks are completed for attorneys, the courts or the criminal justice system; may provide administrative assistance to the department head; and does other related work as required.

The Ideal Candidate
Ability to:
Learn departmental policies, procedures and organization; perform clerical duties under pressure and with many interruptions; perform basic arithmetic; operate various office machines, including word processing equipment; meet the public with tact and courtesy; keep and maintain clerical records and prepare reports; read and comprehend material; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships; type at a speed of 50 net wpm; take dictation from tapes, drafts, orally; convey ideas in written form; organize and compile information into reports; establish good public relations; operate a word processor and a variety of other office automation equipment; supervise and direct the activities of clerical staff assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Either A: Three years of clerical experience in a legal office, court or criminal justice system;
Or B: One year of experience equivalent to a Legal Clerk.
