Florida Fish & Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg is looking for boat mechanic who is a self-starter with the ability to plan & organize boat maintenance and repair work, able to interpret blueprints, take accurate measurements, perform basic math, and understand and apply regulations.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform preventative maintenance and repair of boats, boat engines, trailers, building, grounds, equipment, and other miscellaneous items as directed
- Helping to create and maintain a boat, boat motor, and trailer preventative maintenance program
- Create and organize a safe shop environment with direction from the Safety Program Manager
- Assist the Safety Program Officer in the routine inspection of all boats, boat motors and trailers
- Perform minor repairs on all plumbing, electrical and communication equipment
- Perform repair/alterations of building woodwork (partitions, door, cabinets, and special scientific furniture at FWRI)
- Perform by understanding/following all safety related rules to include OSHA, and FWRI
- Perform/assist in the hurricane preparedness program
- Perform setup and take down of Marine Quest outreach project
- Assist in the annual Coast Guard inspection of all assigned boats
- Access the Work Order system, print work requests and close out completed work orders
- Perform other related marine and facilities duties as required
Minimum Qualifications:
- Three years of automotive and heavy equipment repair work
- OR three years of marine equipment repair work
- Valid Driver License
Preference may be given to those who possess a Florida Boater Safety Card and have experience trailering a boat
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Skills with strong customer service
- Knowledge of the principles and techniques used in the maintaining of boats, engines and trailers
- Proficient with both diesel and gas engines, inboard and outboard motors
- Skill in the use of common bench & hand tools, and the equipment used in maintenance repair work
- Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve all boat and trailer issue.
- Ability to work closely with the FWRI Maintenance Supervisor, Safety Program Officer, other mechanics, Program Researchers & Boat Operators on preventative maintenance scheduling, and implementing all safety requirements and operational needs of FWRI
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Able to easily lift 40 lbs
- Ability to operative a forklift efficiently and safely
- Ability to order supplies, equipment, and track expenses and assist in the billing process, including the use of a corporate Procurement Card
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, especially Outlook
- Able to work collaboratively on a team and communicate with all staff
- Ability to work on other building maintenance issues, in at least two of the following areas (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, welding, carpentry, fabrication, painting, small engine and vehicle repair)
