JOB PURPOSE:
Hoover Institution Library & Archives (HILA) seeks candidates who are passionate about cultural heritage imaging and looking for professional growth. The Digital Imaging Manager is responsible for the leadership, vision, and management of HILA’s mass digitization efforts and providing support for all other imaging services requested by the Engagement and Research Services units with the goal to maintain high throughput, reduce turnaround time and provide researchers with rapid access to digitized collection material.
The Digital Imaging Lab at HILA is embarking on exciting changes with opportunities for a new manager to reimagine how to support and grow mass digitization efforts and imaging services. A recent reorganization brought the Digital Imaging unit into the Preservation department and in 2024, the lab will be relocated into a state-of-the-art digitization space in the newly constructed George P. Shultz Building. Following on the foundational successes of our Digital First Initiative, the new Digital Imaging Manager will be able to further enhance digitization services and increase output by developing a network of third-party vendors to supplement the existing in-house digitization work of two collection photographers and two imaging specialists.
This position will lead, develop, and execute digital media production assignments requiring advanced level skills from original concept through final implementation with limited oversight. Partner with internal and external clients including senior leaders and faculty regarding digital media projects and services. Serve as an in-house digital media expert for a school/unit with time contribution split between project leadership and as a technical contributor.
CORE DUTIES*:
- Plan, research, prepare and produce professional-quality digital media for instruction, promotional programs, location and studio programs, live video conferences and webcasts, live-on-tape studio, and/or other communicative purposes for both internal and external audiences.
- Play an active role in planning, advising, and partnering with clients on strategic and creative projects requiring extensive subject matter knowledge within time and cost constraints.
- Take independent ownership of large, complex digital media projects. Perform the full range of the digital media project cycle: initiating, planning, producing, refinement, delivery, and archiving.
- Develop and market digital services, and manage all aspects of capturing, recording, and transmitting of all digital media productions, video and/or images to internal and external clients. Provide outreach within and across departments of effective applications of digital media.
- Create and oversee the creation of original visual content and produce high impact visual storytelling.
- Manage process from conception, to production, to completion across a diverse array of communications channels and media utilizing best practice standards that foster photographic and video excellence.
- Consult with and help faculty and staff to incorporate digital media into research projects, presentations, course design and curricula in support of student learning or departmental communication goals.
- Manage all aspects of capturing, recording, and transmitting of all digital media productions, video and/or images for internal and external clients.
- May contribute to development of digital media goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and/or manage budget for area of responsibility.
- May serve as internal project leader and provide guidance and training to other staff.
ADDITIONAL CORE DUTIES*:
- Leads, supervises, and mentors staff in producing digital images according to departmental standards and project timelines.
- Develops unit goals and identifies and advocates for staff professional development opportunities to keep the team informed about new technologies and software programs that enhance HILA’s mass digitization efforts.
- Develops and cultivates vendor relationships to support outsourcing of digitization projects.
- Reviews and analyzes digitization metrics to ensure work meets established project goals.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Expert level technical experience using digital media equipment, video creation, editing software, and/or motion graphics and effects software.
- Comprehensive knowledge in production techniques including videography, compression and file delivery and other production formats.
- Extensive knowledge of all aspects of professional quality productions, including field and studio camera, lighting, sound and editing,
- Proven savvy and understanding of online video environment and online distribution.
Ability to independently manage a variety of simultaneous projects within tight deadlines, excellent organizational and time management skills. - Demonstrated experience leading and training others.
- Ability to communicate and articulate digital media products and options and adapt to alternatives when appropriate.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and diplomacy required to interact effectively with and provide customer service to a broad audience, including high-level executives and faculty.
- Ability to work independently as well as effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Experience planning, coordinating, and executing archival digitization projects.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Frequently stand/walk, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, and reach/work above shoulders.
- Occasionally sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat.
- Visual acuity including color vision.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Occasionally work on weekends, evenings, holidays, and flexible shifts.
- May have exposure to high voltage electricity, noise > 80dB TWA, confined spaces, and working at heights above 10 feet.
The expected pay range for this position is $106,000-$133,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
