Position Description
The City of Seattle’s Department of Construction and Inspections is seeking a Housing Zoning Technician to join our team in the Code Compliance Division. Our Housing/Zoning Technicians serve a vital function in the Division, responding to and screening the thousands of complaints and questions we receive each year that drive our business. There are currently two (2) openings available for this exciting opportunity: one regular FTE position and one 6 month temporary opportunity.
The Code Compliance Division consists of three programs. Code Compliance, Rental Registration and Inspection Ordinance (RRIO) and The Renting in Seattle helpline. The Code Compliance program enforces safety and community standards codes including land use, housing, vacant building, noise, and construction codes. The RRIO program works to ensure safe housing for all and includes a requirement that all Seattle rental properties register with the City and have periodic inspections. The Renting in Seattle tenant landlord program is a resource for accessing City Services.

Your effectiveness in this role will depend on your ability to:
• Staff two phone lines, respond to code enforcement and RRIO complaints, and answer questions about the Code Compliance programs
• Work respectfully with customers from varied cultural and educational backgrounds.
• Screen customer questions and complaints for relevance and jurisdiction and prepare timely complaint packages.
• Perform detailed research of multiple, complex sets of records to determine use and occupancy of buildings, property ownership and owner addresses, and permit history; verify accuracy of legal descriptions; assign addresses to cases; and to resolve errors.
• Take initiative in analyzing factual information and solving complex records research issues.
• Maintain record keeping in support of investigation and enforcement processes related to municipal housing and zoning codes and the RRIO program.
• Work with customers who are involved in difficult situations and may be upset or angry.
• Complete special projects as assigned including loading data into permitting systems, creating reports, etc.
You will feel prepared to take on this role if you have experience in:
• Managing a high volume of work via electronic and manual processes
• Maintaining awesome customer service as the baseline in a call center environment
• Working in a fast-paced environment with multiple daily interruptions
• Using multiple permitting systems that track information and manage workflow.
• Adapting to changing circumstances quickly; being flexible and a team-player.
• Demonstrating strong communication skills
Qualifications
• Three years of working with legal descriptions and property ownership records
• Six months of technical training in housing and zoning code enforcement or a related technical field
• Or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background.

The full salary range for this position is $30.05 – $34.94 per hour.
