Job Description

Performs various tasks supporting a variety of Parks and Recreation community events, recreation programs, and athletic activities, including but not limited to setting up for events and program activities, working well as a part of a team, maintaining facilities and equipment, leading and/or participating in recreational activities. The position requires a flexible schedule to provide support as needed and will include weekends, evening and holiday hours. Both office and outdoor working conditions may be required. This position reports to the Downtown Events and Facility Coordinator.

Essential Duties of the Position

The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.

  • Assists the Downtown Event and Facility Coordinator with special events and Growers Market by planning and organizing events; coordinating weekly communications and social media postings; preparing for events by gathering supplies, setting-up and breaking down tables, tents, chairs, staging, and other related equipment.
  • Maintains facilities and equipment including trash removal, parking, and restroom monitoring.
  • Assists other Parks and Recreation staff with setting up and leading athletic programs, recreations programs, summer camps, and facility rentals.
  • Assists park maintenance periodically with semi-skilled tasks such as general maintenance of athletic facilities and park amenities.
  • Performs various public relation responsibilities in assisting with marketing efforts, informing businesses and residents about upcoming events, and addressing community member concerns and inquiries, applying good judgement and discretion.
  • Provides quality and timely customer service to assist with program registrations, as needed.
  • Assists with maintaining order in compliance with established rules.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

General knowledge of recreation, event and athletic programming and activities; some knowledge and ability to use basic maintenance tools and techniques; ability to express ideas verbally and in writing; ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to work with the program participants, families, and the community; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public and provide excellent customer service.

Must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and repetitive motions, frequently reaching with hands and arms and frequently requires standing and walking; work requires close vision, depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and operating machines; work has frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. events, recreation center).
