Pay Range
$113,730.00 – $146,076.00 Annual (TSS.2)
$136,500.00 – $175,272.00 Annual (TSS.3)
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) Statistician. You will provide original solutions and develop innovative methods to perform moderately complex and unique Nondestructive Assay (NDA) measurements and measurement control using specialized knowledge and requiring in-depth analysis. You will perform statistical analysis for measurement control, and implement statistical sampling plans for numerous inventory populations. This position is in the LLNL Security Organization’s MC&A topical area within the Operations and Business Directorate.
In this role you will
- Perform measurements with portable NDA equipment such as isotopic systems.
- Analyze various accountable nuclear material populations.
- Ability to provide statistical analysis of NDA instrument performance to establish measurement control parameters to ensure measurement validity.
- Develop, certify, implement, and maintain NDA instrument measurement control procedures as well as provide measurement control and uncertainty on-the-job training (OJT) and mentoring.
- Interact independently with LLNL NDA laboratory staff and MC&A staff at other NNSA/DOE sites with minimal direction.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition at the TSS.3 level
- Provide specialized and in-depth technical analysis using advanced knowledge to resolve complex statistical problems for the propagation of variance of NDA measurement systems.
- Design statistical sampling plans for multiple inventory populations of complex and challenging material compositions.
- Provide MC&A oversight, audit, and performance testing of NDA laboratory measurement performance.
Qualifications
- Active DOE Q clearance (or active Top Secret clearance) at time of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant previous experience.
- Knowledge and basic understanding of statistical principles.
- Ability to perform NDA measurements with portable instruments.
- Ability to develop and implement statistical sampling plans for nuclear material inventory populations.
- Knowledge and experience involving assurance activities such as performance testing and assessments, as well as documenting deficiencies and establishing corrective actions.
- Experience developing procedural documentation and ability to perform on-the-job training using advanced verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Ability to determine warning and alarm limits for inventory differences using combined precision and bias uncertainties from NDA instruments.
In addition at the TSS.3 level
- Advanced knowledge of in-depth propagation of uncertainties for NDA measurement methods for gamma-ray, neutron, and calorimetric systems and instrumentation.
- Advanced knowledge and experience using statistical methods for establishing measurement control criteria that can be applied to NDA measurement system instrumentation.
Qualifications We Desire
- Master’s degree in Statistics, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field.
- Technical lead or supervisory authority experience.
- Certified in Technical Management and experience providing audit and oversight.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
