The Assistant Director-Office of Arts and Culture assists and supports the direction, oversight, administration, and development of cultural venues providing enriching and creative environments to serve the Community; works with Director to manage venues, support and lead venue team, oversee art curation and commissioning, facilitate radio channel, and create an equitable environment where artists thrive and multi-cultural heritage is celebrated.
Essential Functions

1 Directs, administers, and supports the overall management, operation, development, and delivery of cultural programs and public art for the benefit of the City of Dallas; stewards cultural venues, manages large team of staff and managers, assists in commissioning and curation activities, manages radio supporting cultural program communications, and assists in the halding of large budget and funding activities supporting the City’s cultural initiatives.

2 Collaborates with Director and mid-management to supports commission activities for public art displays; participates and assists the Director leading the commission meeting, creating agenda items, and providing leadership for issues or concerns; attends allocations committee meetings and prepares updates to Commissioners based on Council request; provides all follow up and support.

3 Leads, guides, manages and supports mid-management staff working in venues providing oversight for security, maintenance, general administration, contract negotiation, and public art and budget functions; supports all hiring, training, evaluation, discipline, and termination activities for staff; hosts meetings to ensure transparency and consistency in service delivery.

4 Assists the Director in the implementation of the Cultural Plan iniatiatives; serves on task force to develop long range plans and ensure the support of individual artists and art programs.

5 Identifies, determines, and addresses areas of quality management to enhance productivity through improved work procedures, practices, communication, and accountability; works with Director to facilitate and coordinate changes across the arts and culture landscape.

6 Represents the City at local, state and national organizations and at professional activities to maintain the image of the City and to create public support for departmental programs; represents OAC on cross functional efforts at the City and attends all major partner events.

7 Administers and supports efforts to achieve the mission and goals of the OAC; works to enhance the vitality of the city and the quality of life through creating an environment of creativity and expression; enhances and celebrates the City’s diversity through strong arts and culture programs.

8 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1 Knowledge of public administration and department management.

2 Knowledge of the arts and culture ecosystem of the City of Dallas.

3 Knowledge of commissioning art, funding art programs, and facilitating a large scale creative system.

4 Knowledge of strategic planning, long range planning, and managing plan implementation.

5 Ability to oversee large budget and make funding and allocation decisions to benefit cultural programs.

6 Ability to manage and supervise large team of staff supporting cultural programs, venues, and operational activities.

7 Ability to work with a diversified group of individuals, artists, and organizations.

8 Ability to support and facilitate the success of arts and cultural initiatives in the city enhancing quality of life for communities.

9 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

10 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Experience
7 years of arts management or related work experience.

Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Arts, Public Administration or related field, MBA preferred.

Working Conditions and Hazards
Dependent upon unit or program assignment, usually normal office conditions.
