The Bureau of Architecture
We are a full service Professional Architectural design and project delivery office that provides design consulting services to various City agencies in San Francisco. We are one of the few City Departments in the country that provide full Architectural design services. Our work includes civic projects such as Fire Houses, Libraries, Recreation Buildings, Parks, Public Safety buildings and Health Services buildings, Clinics and/or Renovations.

San Francisco Public Works’ Bureau of Architecture (BOA) has multiple vacancies for the position of Architectural Associate I (5265), Job Captain, in our Building Design and Construction team. We are seeking motivated candidates with strong design and/or construction document experience and are highly qualified in REVIT. You will be successful in this role if your expertise is in working on projects of various sizes where you assumed project design responsibility for planning, development, and execution of planning & technical documentation, including consultant coordination.

Appointment Type: Temporary Provisional (TPV). This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years.

Job Description

Under direction, as an Architectural Associate I, you will perform and be responsible for a variety of complex architectural duties in connection with the investigation of building sites, the preparation and coordination of preliminary and final working designs and drawings, and the preparation of related specifications for a variety of building renovations and construction maintenance and conversion projects. You may be tasked with planning and assigning work to other architectural drafting personnel. In this role you will interact and coordinate design work with other Public Works design disciplines such as architects, civil engineers, structural engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and mechanical engineers. During design work, you will support and produce plans and designs to present to City departments, residents, communities, agencies, commissions, and all stakeholders to achieve consensus before proceeding with construction documents.

Important and Essential Duties:
As an Architectural Associate I, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • You will supervise and participate in the preparation of preliminary plans and detailed drawings for a wide variety of complex construction, conversion, and repair projects.
  • Developing finished designs of regular projects and portions of designs for highly complex projects.
  • Analyzing and interpreting data, sketches, and designs providing technical assistance to architectural drafting personnel engaged in such work.
  • You will prepare and review contract specifications for various projects.
  • Coordinates design activities with those responsible for the structural, mechanical, and electrical design phases of such projects.
  • Participate in meetings and discussions with representatives of City departments and outside organizations related to design specifications and functional use problems.
  • Creating field observations of projects under construction to ensure compliance with contract documents; taking field measurements, documenting existing conditions, and incorporating data provided by other professionals, such as surveyors and geotechnical engineers.
  • Develops, coordinates, and reviews quantity and cost estimates; checking construction submittals to determine if contract specifications are in compliance.
  • You may be required to perform duties in connection with the architectural phases of interior design and construction management and, when appropriate, apply critical path method techniques.
  • Assists in the development and advancement of junior team members.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Architecture or an architecture-related field such as Environmental Design or Interior Architecture, or a professional degree in Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture) from an accredited college or university.

AND

Experience:
Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the architectural field including architectural design, architectural detailing, construction documents, programming, preliminary cost budgeting, specification coordination and review, construction administration, and field observation of architectural construction projects, all under the direction of a licensed architect. One (1) year must have been served as a job captain, project lead, or in some role of increased responsibility and supervision on a project. (Experience in a lower-level class (i.e., 5260 or 5261) is considered qualifying.)

AND

License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Notes:

  • One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • Relevant construction document, specification, and detailing experience for multiple building types.
  • Construction administration experience for multiple building typologies of varying scale.
  • Working knowledge of Construction Types I through V and experience with projects in the Bay Area and/or within a Seismic Zone 4 zone.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of San Francisco & California Building Codes.
  • Highly skilled and experienced working in REVIT with an Autodesk REVIT training Certificate
  • Proficiency in AUTOCAD.
  • Skilled in Adobe Suite, including Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, Sketch-Up
  • Supervisory experience over support drafting a plus.
  • LEED professional accreditation a plus
  • Experience developing construction documents for three (3) or more built projects over ten (10) million dollars.
  • Ability to quickly generate hand drawn details and/or hand sketching abilities a plus.
