Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Recreational and E-Sports provides oversight of all aspects of the management of the Department of Recreational and E-Sports, a college enterprise devoted to the provision of recreational programs and services for students, staff, and faculty of the college. This position will also be an active collaborator with peers at other two-year educational institutions across the NJCAAE for alignment of policies and procedures, attend fitness and professional conferences and other events, with the community through programs to improve health and recreation, and with outside vendors for assistance with events.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative

  1. Monitors eligibility status and promotes academic progress of student-athletes.
  2. Develop a viable fundraising strategy in collaboration with the Donor and Alumni Relations office. Develop community partnerships and support the E-Sports program.
  3. Enforces department and team expectations regarding the general standard of behavior for student-athletes. Create and maintain a culture of sportsmanship and manage team disciplinary matters. Coordinate schedules, competitions, and any required travel plans.
  4. Establish competitive performance goals and plans to meet those goals. Provide oversight and evaluation of a holistic training program including physical and mental health initiatives.
  5. Actively participate in department and college-wide meetings and events, and adapt work as required to meet overall campus goals
  6. Work with the Associated Vice President of Student Life & Engagement to assist in managing the recreational/intramural budget.
  7. Be knowledgeable of, and abide by, all College and campus policies, campus recreational policies, and requirements.
  8. Prepare and monitor monthly, quarterly, and annual departmental budgets.
  9. Ensure proper enforcement of policy manual and event rules, including all forms, waivers & releases, score sheets, participation records, etc.

E-SPORTS

  1. Manage the recruitment of student-athletes, including achieving yearly recruiting goals in partnership with the admissions office.
  2. Oversees all aspects of the E-Sports Arena including daily operations, technological infrastructure, cleaning and maintaining of equipment, etc. Oversees all equipment maintenance, ordering, and repairs for the E-Sports arena.
  3. Partner with the Community and Media Relations Department to market the E-Sports program locally, regionally, and nationally.
  4. Plan, conduct, and evaluate practice activities. Provide group and individual assistance in a manner that engages the athletes and builds commitment to the program.
  5. Partner with the admissions department to coordinate visits and holistic recruitment of E-Sports student-athletes. Meet with prospective students and their family members both on campus and at remote locations as possible.
  6. Provide advice and counsel on the admissions process, the Palomino experience, and the integral role of the student-athlete in overall campus life.
  7. Establish proper standard operating procedures, risk management policies, and controls for recreational and intramural sports. Develop safety protocols including emergency response procedures.

Recreational Sports

  1. Oversees all aspects of the varsity, competitive club, recreational club, and daily operations of the E-Sports program. This is to include but not limited to sponsored games, special events, and facility operations.
  2. Identify and create ongoing recreational leagues and short-term special events. Increase participation in recreational and intramural programs through various modes of marketing and promotion
  3. Cultivate an inclusive, safe, and diverse environment for students as well as student staff, and address patron concerns, behavior, and conduct issues as necessary.
  4. Responsible for hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, and evaluating the student and professional staff to support a variety of programs and services offered within intramurals and campus recreation.
  5. Provide direct supervision for the daily operations of the following facilities, this includes Maravillo gymnasium, Ft. McIntosh Sports Complex, and South Campus Sports Complex.
  6. Enforcing building policies and procedures
  7. Maintains student confidentiality following all HIPAA and FERPA laws.
  8. Ensure proper operation and maintenance of all equipment and amenities.
  9. Professional Development (Local and National) with the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
  10. Collaborate with other college departments for programs and events for incoming students during new student orientation.
  11. Develops and offers students, faculty, and staff opportunities to become healthier with health-related classes, programs, and activities.
  12. Performs other duties and/or manages projects as assigned

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Sports/E-Sports Management or Kinesiology.
  • The qualified candidate must have collegiate E-Sports experience as a coach or student-athlete.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to the academic and athletic success of the student-athletes as well as working knowledge of computer, network, and streaming/broadcast equipment.
  • Five (5) years of full-time employment in Recreational/Intramural Sports in Higher Education experience in organizing, planning, and implementing recreation, fitness, wellness, and special events in a college setting.
  • Member of NIRSA
  • CPR/First Aid Certified
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Kinesiology/Recreational Sports/E-Sports
  • A minimum of 10 years of full-time employment in Recreational Sports in a Higher Education setting.

  • Technical knowledge of the hardware, software, and networking requirements for gaming and recreational and competitive E-Sports.

  • Ability to troubleshoot basic technical issues and work with IT staff to address advanced issues.
  • Ability to foster an environment of belonging and well-being.
  • Ability to serve and collaborate with a large user community reflecting a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and knowledgeably.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (some evenings/weekends) and travel as needed.
