Position Description
The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) is excited to announce a Site Development Inspector opening with the Inspections Services Division. Our inspectors perform daily earthwork and drainage related inspections of new construction, additions, and alterations which have been permitted by the City of Seattle. This position also responds to complaints on site development, tree cutting, and erosion discharges.
Job Responsibilities
- On-site inspections of development projects, sewer drainage, first ground, and site finals within the City of Seattle.
- Conduct TESC and PASV inspections in pre and post permit application site visits and on-site inspections.
- Enforce Environmentally Critical Area (ECA) regulations, the City of Seattle Standard Specifications for Roads, Bridges and Municipal Construction, Best Management Practices for Erosion Control, Storm Water, Grading, Drainage Control and Side Sewer code.
- Perform pre-application site impact analysis, perform erosion control inspections, grading inspections, storm water and sanitary side sewer system installation inspections.
- Ensure that construction activities comply with the City’s Environmentally Critical Area Regulations, Storm water, Grading and Drainage Control Code, Side Sewer Code, adopted engineering standard details and material specifications and related City policies.
- Investigate violations, respond to drainage and steep slope incidents; determine alternatives for compliance; initiate enforcement actions, including recommendations for issuing stop work notices.
- Review applications for construction projects in critical areas and advise on compliance issues and mitigation measures
- Attend on-site preconstruction conferences to implement permit requirements.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, geology, environmental sciences, plus three years’ practical construction or construction inspection experience (and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Work Environment/Physical Demands:Work is performed both in an office and outdoor environment. Incumbents are required to stand, walk or bend for extended periods. Outdoor work is required in all types of weather, hazardous uneven ground, and sometimes near unsafe buildings. Work is also conducted in and around heavy equipment and traffic control areas.
Successful candidates will possess the following:
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet inspection deadlines
- Self-starter, highly organized with good written and oral communication skills, especially when conveying technical code information
- Excellent organizational and documentation capabilities.
- Ability to work as a team member in a demanding and stress filled work environment.

The full salary range for this position is $44.95 – $52.41 per hour.
