The Communications Strategist serves as member of the Public Relations team and supports the external communication needs of Principal Asset Management and enterprise partners. This position is responsible for the strategic development, production, and distribution of communication enhancing brand messaging, telling a Principal story, and supporting high-level enterprise strategy and business objectives. By connecting Asset Management spokespeople with important opportunities to advance thought leadership and business objectives through public relations, this position helps people, companies, and institutions around the world build, protect, and advance their financial well-being. As a global asset manager, this role will work with partners within Asset Management to enhance the Principal brand around the world.
In this role you will have the opportunity to:
- Serve as point of contact for spokespeople and leadership within Asset Management as they tell the Principal story through external channels including broadcast, digital and print media.
- Write and edit a variety of communications materials including talking points, emails, media pitches, articles, and presentations on asset management and other topics that elevate the Principal point of view.
- Consult and assist communications strategy leaders and business partners in developing and refining messaging and delivery for specific audiences and communications channels to maximize impact and effectiveness, producing supporting communications plans as needed. Collaborate with colleagues across the team and organization to ensure consistent, integrated messaging and execution on issues that matter most to our brand, our business, and our stakeholders.
- Measure the effectiveness of communications, providing counsel where adjustment may be needed. Produce data-driven reports to advance strategic decision-making.

Who You Are
- You’ll have a Bachelor’s degree or 8 years of work experience.
- You have 6+ years work experience in writing, communications, public relations, or marketing
- You have the ability to take an integrated communications approach to solve basic communication issues
- You’ll have experience writing and editing all forms for a variety of audiences, including for social and digital platforms
- You have excellent organizational, presentation, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills, along with strong basic analytical skills
- You are adaptable, flexible and able to handle changing priorities
- You will be able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
- You’ll have basic PC skills with the ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and pay strict attention to detail
- You’ll consistently meet deadlines
Skills That Will Help You Stand Out:
- Previous communications experience within the asset management industry – strongly preferred
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range
$77350 – $147600 / year

Location(s)
This role will ideally be located in Des Moines, IA, but we are willing to consider remote applicants as well.
Work Environments
This role offers the ability for hybrid (blending both office and remote work in a typical workweek) arrangement or fully remote, if not based in Des Moines. Remote employees might travel to the office once a quarter for department gatherings and other meetings.
