Position Information
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position is responsible for helping implement classes and programs, including weekend, evening, and summer opportunities, offered through the District and its partners for individuals with disabilities.

In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:

  • Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
  • Interact professionally with other employees, customers and suppliers.
  • Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
  • Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, implement appropriate safety practices at all times and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards

Essential Duties

  • Assist the implementation of recreation activities for youth with disabilities, including but not limited to adaptive sports, arts & crafts, mentor programs, science experiments, games, camps, field trips, outdoor/ nature experiences, theater and songs.
  • Assist in the supervision of all assigned groups of participants.
  • Work in small groups or 1:1 with students with Recreation Leader support to regulate sensory, emotional, and/or behavioral needs as related to approved reasonable accommodations for participation.
  • Report any incidents and/or safety concerns to Camp Directors and/or Adaptive Specialist/Coordinator as soon as is appropriate.
  • Follow all health and safety protocols.
  • Provide a safe, fun and engaging atmosphere for all participants.
  • Be actively involved with participants and engage in activities at all times.
  • Work closely with other employees in an enthusiastic, cooperative and supportive manner; ensure collaboration with all staff.
  • Develop positive, supportive relationships with participants & the public.
  • Assist assigned supervisor with preparing information and materials for assigned site.
  • Represent Metro Parks Tacoma professionally at all times.
  • Re-enforce discipline, according to camp and out of school time guidelines, as needed.
  • Perform emergency first aid and CPR as needed and according to established guidelines; provide for proper safety of participants in recreational programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Inclusive mindset and openness to working with individuals with a wide range of disabilities.
Must be available to work the entire assigned season; Fall, Winter/Spring, Summer. 2023 Summer Camp availability needed:
July 31 – August 17
Mondays – Thursdays, 8:30am – 1:30pm
Must be able to attend the mandatory training and orientation.
Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule as needed.
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Must have a valid First-Aid and CPR cards before date of employment or be willing to get certified once hired.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Must have leadership skills with ability to be a team player.
Must be creative, energetic and patient.
Previous work with youth / camps desired.

ENVIRONMENT:
Recreational facilities and park environment involving indoor and outdoor assignments.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Ability to prepare written or typed recreational and leisure program material and monitor activities.
Ability to conduct classes and exchange information.
Navigating over rough or uneven surfaces outside in park locations and in the field.
Lifting up to 25 pounds.
Standing and or sitting for extended periods of time.
