Summary/Objective
The Parks Crew Leader I oversees a crew that performs the maintenance of trees, turf, shrubs, flowers, trails, and equipment, as well as oversees construction and maintenance of buildings, facilities, grounds, and roads within city owned parks. In addition, this role oversees and assists in off hour emergencies such as floods, tornados, snow removal, or similar occurrences.
Essential Functions
Oversees and performs park maintenance duties – specific duties may vary by location/section.
- Operates maintenance tools and equipment.
- Responds to and coordinates the response of maintenance personnel for off-duty callbacks.
- Works and communicates with developers and contractors and interacts with property owners and public during park and street tree maintenance.
- Identifies needed improvements in daily operations and maintenance schedules and coordinates with staff to assure the completion of those improvements.
- Maintains all aquatic facilities including pools and ice rinks in Park locations; checks for chemical levels and performs maintenance duties – Aquatics section
- Inspects turf conditions, adjusts irrigation levels, and performs various landscaping and turf maintenance duties
- Performs maintenance and repairs to irrigation systems and turf equipment
- Performs maintenance and repairs to Park buildings and facilities
- Ensures safety of work sites to protect the public and work crews.
- Maintains sectional safety protocols through proper use of tools, equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintains a safety-oriented work zone through proper use of safety procedures such as lockout-tagout, safe distance awareness, trench safety, confined space protocol, traffic control procedures, etc.
Supervises and manages Maintenance Worker and Park Technician positions.
- Hires and train staff members, as needed.
- Provides supervision and oversight of applicable staff.
- Coordinates schedules of applicable staff.
- Administers City of Manhattan Policies and Procedures in a consistent manner.
- Ensures employees supervised demonstrate productivity, competence, and high morale, as well as utilize employees’ skills and abilities.
- Conducts performance planning and evaluations for employees in a timely manner, to include development of goals, objectives, and deadlines.
- Resolves routine personnel issues or problems.
- Leads and manages staff with clear and consistent communications.
- Ensures accurate and proper utilization of the Park’s management software by subordinates to maintain extensive records regarding the Parks system.
Performs additional duties as required
- Attends meetings and training.
- Prepares reports.
- Manages unpleasant interactions and stress caused by irate and/or defensive customers.
- Ensures compliancy with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures in all duties.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- 2 years of experience in Park, Facility, Arboriculture, and/or Landscape Maintenance; completion of a directly-related degree program can be substituted for years of experience
- Three applicable license(s) and/or certification(s) as determined by section responsibilities must be obtained within one (1) year and maintained.
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Education and Experience
- Associate degree and/or applicable certificate program
- Four years of experience in Park, Facility, Arboriculture, and/or Landscape Maintenance
