DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, this position functions as the Lead CUP Operator and provides day-to-day oversight which includes responsibility for the operation, maintenance and repair of high-pressure boilers and chillers for the heating and cooling of a major Health Sciences facility. Lead CUP Operators are also responsible for oversight of the operation, service, and repair of power plants involving, high voltage electrical distribution systems, Diesel Generator, Fuel Storage tanks, Automatic Transfer Switches, emission control equipment, Centrifugal chillers, electric chillers, and thermal energy storage systems. Monitors various energy management systems for the facility.

Other duties include analyzing chilled water, boilers, closed-loops, condenser water, reverse osmosis water, and deionized water. The Lead CUP Operator is distinguished from the Lead Systems Operator in that the Lead CUP Operator typically works with stationary and centralized equipment that support the entire Hospital operation.

Lead CUP Operator will ensure the monitoring, operation and maintenance of combined heat and power plant, chilled water/high temperature hot water systems, and connected co-generation equipment controls. Oversight on service, and repair of stationary power plant equipment including gas turbines, high voltage electrical distribution systems, natural gas compressors, emission control equipment, steam driven chillers, electric chillers, and thermal energy storage systems.

Supports plant operations that ensure continuous plant performance safely and efficiently. Monitors and responds to changes in operating conditions to maintain continuous plant performance. Perform plant operations, perform work duties and routines, perform minor planned and corrective maintenance, and respond to emergencies as needed. Perform physical watch stander rounds of the Central Utility & Co-generation Plants per prescribed frequencies and in accordance with established round protocols and recording direction. Diagnose any abnormal conditions that have been escalated; trouble-shoot any plant issues.

This is a watch standing position, which will require maintenance duties. Adhere to policies, procedures, and practices on safety and plant operation instructions. Medical Center Lead Central Utility Plant Operator is responsible for monitoring incoming calls from customers, and dispatching the building operators to access the customer’s call request. Reviewing and distributing a variety of Facilities Engineering requests. Using their knowledge of the trades or services to dispatch and monitor work orders. Receive trouble calls and call in necessary personnel during power outages and emergencies. During emergency situations, the Lead CPU Operator is responsible to make sure all escalation communication has been sent out to Supervisor, and Managers/Directors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have valid California Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
  • Los Angeles Steam Engineer License.
  • Journeyman level Plant Operator with proven experience in support of plant operations.
  • Proven ability to provide customer support and information, as needed, to keep customers satisfied.
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate orally, both in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to represent the FE department and Medical Center in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Familiar with UCSD policies, procedures, and practices on safety and plant operation instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Environmental Protection Agency Certification (EPA) or commitment to get certified w/in 6 months of hire.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Certification.
  • Healthcare environment experience.
  • Ability to monitor, operate, and maintain combined heat and power plant, chilled water/high temperature hot water systems, and connected co-generation equipment controls.

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $109,871 – $109,871 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $52.62 – $52.62

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
