Position Overview

The primary purpose of this position is to determine eligibility for Food and Nutrition programs which includes intake, processing, and maintenance of cases in the Food and Nutrition Services unit.

Starting Salary Range: $31,884.90 – $35,153.10 depending upon education and experience. Will accept “work-against” applications.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work Schedule

8:00 AM to 5:00 PM or a similar flex schedule amounting to 40 hours a week (e.g. four 10-hour days) Monday through Friday. Some after-hours work is required on occasion.

  • Conduct interviews during intake to assess needs and obtain information.
  • Inform Food and Nutrition Services applicants of their rights, appeal decisions, ability to withdraw application, right to re-apply if found ineligible, responsibilities of the agency.
  • Complete recertifications and changes in accordance with provided guidance, regulations, and policies.
  • Utilize the NCFAST computer system
  • Adhere to established deadlines.
  • Complete paperwork as mandated by the agency or county administration.
  • Attend various training workshops/webinars.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and one year of experience as an Income Maintenance Caseworker; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Will accept “work-against” applications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and comprehend rules and regulations, often changing policies and guidelines pertaining to Food and Nutrition assistance programs.
  • Ability to interpret agency’s policies and procedures to people of varied backgrounds.
  • Ability to accurately key codes and data into NCFAST.
  • Obtain data for documentation and verification of information needed in determining eligibility.
  • Detect need for other agency services and make appropriate referrals to the service staff.
  • Work with facts and figures and perform tasks involving a high degree of accuracy.
  • Learn the intricacies of numerous forms and procedures of the eligibility programs.
  • Present information orally or in report form.
  • Acquire interest in and understanding of disadvantaged persons.
  • Possess qualities of patience and tolerance, and an awareness of various cultures.
  • Must have ability to effectively communicate face- to- face and on the telephone.
