DEFINITION: Under the direction of full-time MORPC Staff, the Community Development Intern will use undergraduate and graduate school training (including basic foundations in planning concepts, research, data analysis and visualization, and GIS) to assist with a wide range of Community Development projects and programs.

Examples of Duties

Assignments will include working with MORPC staff to assist with a variety of community assistance projects. Examples of typical work duties include:

  • Collect, summarize, and analyze data related to active transportation, housing, and development, among others.
  • Assist with meeting and event preparation related to Central Ohio Blueways, Technical Assistance Program, Housing Roundtables, and Central Ohio Greenways.
  • Conduct independent research and present information to various audiences.
  • Conduct field work in various conditions.*
  • Work collaboratively on projects, as assigned.

*This internship will require field work in various conditions (such as setting up automated pedestrian and bicycle counters).

Typical Qualifications

Strong communication skills (both written and verbal), analytical/research skills, and organizational skills are required for the position. Working knowledge of MS Office is essential, and experience with ArcGIS and cartographic principles is desired. The applicant should have strong technical writing skills and attentiveness to details. The ability to work independently and in teams, and to maintain a positive working relationship with peers, the public, and outside agencies is also necessary.

Acceptable Experience and Training:
Applicant must be currently enrolled full-time in a college or university and studying in a field related to City & Regional Planning, Transportation, Sustainability/Environment, or Geography.

Estimated start date is mid-August 2023. Interns are typically employed up to 20 hours per week during semesters with classes and 30 – 40 hours per week during academic breaks.
