Digital Safety Lead Technical Advisor – Principal Group Product Manager

The Digital Safety Office at Microsoft has the mission to empower every person to have safe and trusted digital experiences across Microsoft products and services. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Technical Advisor/Principal Group Product Manager (GPM) to play a pivotal role in ensuring the integration of digital safety by design across our diverse range of digital products and services. This role will report directly to the Chief Digital Safety Officer, serve as part of the Digital Safety Leadership Team, and engage with senior leaders across Microsoft, government and non-governmental organizations.

In this position, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic roadmap that aligns with our Microsoft Digital Safety Standard commitments to user safety, privacy, and protection from online content and conduct harms. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, attorneys, public policy professionals and content policy experts to embed robust digital safety measures into our products and services. The integration of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) into nearly every product at Microsoft has created huge opportunities to meaningfully advance digital safety, but also introduces complex new questions about the evolving harm and threat landscape. You will have the ability to shape how the trust and safety discipline responds to these new threats.

The ideal candidate will think broadly about how world events affect technology and society and will have a background in digital safety or compliance, with experience working alongside attorneys, industry groups, and trust and safety experts.

This role will be based in our Redmond, WA office.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree AND 10+ years experience in product/service/project/program management or software development
    • OR equivalent experience
  • 6+ years people management experience

Preferred Skills

  • Practical knowledge and/or experience in trust and safety, including content moderation, privacy or responsible AI
  • Thrives in opportunities to think about both broad end-to-end experiences and detailed implementation.
  • Ability to determine and evaluate product roadmaps through collaboration with others, addressing implementation challenges that arise from customer, company, and/or policy decisions.
  • Ability to drive clarity in a fast-paced, dynamic landscape across a complex, matrixed environment.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to adapt and tailor messages for different audiences including communicating technical information to policymakers and other non-technical audiences.

Product Management M6 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 – $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 – $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities:
This is a people manager role in which you will be responsible for defining digital safety product strategy and direction:

  • Develop and execute long-term vision and near-term strategic plans to integrate digital safety engineering and operations across the Microsoft portfolio of products and services in collaboration with product leadership.
  • Provide expert guidance and recommendations on digital safety measures, including content moderation techniques, user authentication and verification, privacy controls, and data protection mechanisms.
  • Understand the broader ecosystem of Microsoft products and where to leverage capabilities and functionalities across the broader ecosystem.
  • Strengthen the governance model for Digital Safety within Microsoft. This includes defining and implementing auditable processes and frameworks for accountability, change management, decision-making, and planning.
  • Resolve complex alignment issues, contribute to portfolio-level solutions, and drives cross-functional clarity for digital safety with senior leadership, including the Corporate Senior Leadership Team and Board of Directors.
  • Act as subject matter expert including staying abreast of latest industry standards, best practices, regulatory requirements and research in digital safety to ensure our products and services remain at the forefront of user protection.
  • Collaborate with teams across the company to develop and implement innovative solutions that leverage generative AI to enhance our trust and safety systems and processes.
  • Work across a multi-disciplinary team to help build technical understanding and translate engineering concepts for a range of audiences, including external stakeholders.
  • Manage a small team of talented technical professionals and foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and learning.
  • Work as a core member of the Digital Safety Leadership Team, and in partnership with the Chief Digital Safety Officer, peers across the company and in the industry to drive the future of digital safety globally.
