Summary
Background Information on the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Center:The Menard Center is the premier indoor sports and event facility in the Mat-Su Valley. Show cased on 60 wooded and beautiful acres, the Menard Center at 104,000 square feet, includes an NHL-size ice arena, an indoor artificial turf court, (the MTA Turf Arena), dryland training center, a running/walking track, batting cage with pitching machine, three community meeting rooms, and a commercial kitchen. On the complex grounds: rodeo arena with grandstand bleachers, and one-mile paved walking trail around the perimeter of the property.
What to Expect:
As our Sports Center Facility Operator at the Menard Sports Complex, you will perform daily tasks to assist in the operation and maintenance of the facility and engage in a variety of assignments under the general direction of the Facility Supervisor and Sports Center Manager.
Every day, you will be opening and closing the facility while doing a thorough walk through, setting up for events and meeting rooms, making sure the arena floor is clean and ready and bathrooms are clean and well-stocked, guiding temporary custodial staff, assisting with forklift and powerlift, and performing a variety of administrative and custodial tasks.
You will be operating on a schedule that varies from week to week. This can include working 8-hour night or morning shifts, working to midnight, and/or working the weekends for various events. Most of the time you will be working with one other employee. Some days you can average walking 8-12 miles during your shift. Duties include skilled and semi-skilled tasks, which often require heavy lifting and a high degree of physical activity.
To be successful at this job, you must have a combination of customer service skills (taking phone calls, assisting with customer inquiries, enforcing rules and policies), physical stamina (prolonged periods of standing and walking and lifting objects), and time management (prepare the facility in between groups and prioritize which tasks need to be done first).

Job Duties
The responsibilities listed below are illustrative of the various types of duties that may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Perform general custodial duties to include but not limited to sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping floors, emptying trash, cleaning windows and ice rink protective glass, washing walls, and cleaning restrooms.
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, parking areas, and driveways by shoveling, salting, sanding, and operating a truck mounted snowplow or skid steer.
- Prepare the ice sheet for users using a mechanically operated ice resurfacer.
- Prepare various areas of the facility for different programming and facility uses by the public including event equipment set-up such as stage, pipe & drape, tables chairs, and audio-visual.
- Assist in servicing and maintaining the facility, equipment and machines painting and various projects as directed.
- Provide a safe and clean environment throughout the facility for patrons, staff and organizations.
- Perform general grounds maintenance to include but not limited to mowing and trimming lawns, bushes, and trees.
- Provide proper care and maintenance of indoor turf field, track, arena, meeting rooms, and all other areas of the facility while operating a variety of tools-equipment.
- Perform basic administrative functions such as answer phones, customer interaction, customer service, and operating a Point-of-Sale system (P.O.S) with cash register.
- Complete Open and Closing building procedures without direct supervision.
- Provide direction and assistance to Sports Center Facility Crew Members (on-call).
- Observe and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility and City of Wasilla policies and code.
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience and/or Education:
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Preferred one (1) year experience in maintenance, or any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described.
- Prefer prior experience performing duties in an event center, ice arena or sports center.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of application and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
- Must provide a current (dated within 30 days of request) driving record from the state in which driver’s license is held.
- Must obtain a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License.
- Must obtain in-house or industry certifications before operating on-site equipment.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to work in all weather conditions indoors (ice rink) and outdoors.
- Ability to frequently lift and/or move items up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to be on feet/walk on hard surfaces & ice for extended periods or whole shift.
Additional Information
Scope and Accountability/Supervisory Responsibility:
The Sports Center (SC) Facility Operator is expected to assist the Sports Center Facility Supervisor in operating and maintaining normal building day-to-day activities. Tasks will vary; however, each task is generally of a routine nature and performed to standards and guidelines. Work will include weekends and shifts may begin as early as 5:00 AM or ending as late as 1:00 AM. Work is performed with independence within prescribed guidelines, standards, and procedures. The SC Facility Operator is responsible for advising, providing direction and guidance to subordinates. This position reports directly to the SC Facility Supervisor.

- Retirement is provided through the State of Alaska PERS (Public Employee’s Retirement System). Employees who first became members on or after July 1, 2006 participate in PERS Tier IV, the Defined Contribution Plan. Participation in PERS is mandatory and the current contribution rate is 8% of gross wages. Defined Benefit (Tier I, II, III) current contribution rate is 6.75% of gross wages. Employees in this Defined Benefit are eligible to participate in the Voluntary Savings Account. The City of Wasilla matches 5% of employee contributions for Tier IV employees and a 22% Cost Share for Tier I-III employees. Upon reaching 5 years of employment with the City of Wasilla, an employee will become fully vested.
- State of Alaska Supplemental Benefit System (SBS) annuity plan is provided in lieu of Federal Social Security (deductions for Medicare will still be required). Participation in this program is mandatory. The current employee contribution is 6.13% of gross wages and is matched by the City. - Health insurance is provided through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Monthly premiums are currently paid 100% by the city for employees and dependents. Coverage begins on the first of the month following 30 days continuous employment. Currently there is not an out-of-pocket premium cost. Deductible for individual/family is $500/$1,500 and Out of Pocket maximum is $3,500/$7,000. The maximum out of pocket for prescription drugs is $3,000 per person and $6,000 per family. The plan deductible runs on the fiscal year, July 1 through June 30.
- Life insurance is offered and 100% paid for employees and dependents through Symetra Life Insurance Company. Employees receive a $50,000 policy and each eligible dependent receives and $2,000 policy. Additional coverage is available for purchase. Coverage begins on 1st of the month following 30 days continuous employment.
