Summary
The Gas Turbine Operator 2 operates and maintains the 150 MW Gas Turbine Combined Cycle Flynn Power Plant and the 50 MW Brentwood Gas Turbine Power Plant to meet all safety, environmental and load requirements. Actively participates in site Safety administration and committees. Actively uses Maximo planning and work order tools. Provides ability to analyze complex technical problems and executes solutions to same.
Responsibilities
- Conduct roving inspections to service station equipment and observe, correct, and report abnormal conditions to the control room.
- Perform manual starting and shutting down of gas turbine generator, steam turbine generator and balance of plant equipment.
- Operate digital control systems to regulate plant to conform to economic and environmental limits.
- Synchronize generators & regulate load, voltage & frequency.
- Analyze plant systems utilizing diagnostic tools of the digital control system.
- Use electrical test equipment to analyze problems in circuits, switches and controls.
- Use hand and power tools to perform electrical and mechanical maintenance.
- Safely conduct switching of high voltage equipment.
- Perform heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and combustion turbine generator (CTG) inspection as per one day outage requirements and more extensive inspections/closeouts during major outages.
- Compile, compute, evaluate and report engineering information to assist engineers. Recommend action on plans and procedures, develop equipment and material specifications.
- Coordinate and supervise contractor work with plant operation.
- Receive bulk chemical deliveries and safely transfer to proper tanks.
- Operate demineralization plant and performs regeneration of same.
- Check inventory for required job materials, research parts/materials on all plant auxiliary equipment, generate purchase request or stock issue for material needed for work orders within budget guidelines.
- Work in maintenance, technical services and purchasing/warehousing to support plant objectives.
- Collect samples of, and perform standard chemical analysis on water, oil, solids or gases relating to power plant cycle.
- Maintain filing system and accurate log of all data pertinent to station water treatment. Clean, service and perform simple maintenance on instrumentation.
- Performs required safety walk downs and job observations, may serve on site safety committee.
- Ensure operation of Brentwood Plant to meet safety, environmental and load requirements.
- Perform site security duties at Brentwood and Flynn including escorting visitors, monitoring security system cameras and performing detex security rounds.
- Is a member of plant fire brigade. Respond to plant oil/chemical spills. Responsible and trained to act as first responder to injury, environmental, or fire emergency, First Aid/CPR/AED.
- Perform minor maintenance of facility, as well as administrative tasks and functions such as snow removal, warehouse deliveries, painting and general housekeeping.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Expert knowledge and experience required in gas turbine technology, steam cycles, pumps, compressors, complex controls, power plant chemistry, high voltage switchgear, pressure vessels, environmental regulations and safe work practices.
- Ability to analyze and react quickly to complex, severe and unexpected plant events in order to maintain production and to prevent injury to personnel, damage to equipment, or violations of environmental regulations.
- Able to operate gas and steam turbine starting, excitation and control systems.
- Computer and electronic skills including digital control systems and programmable logic controllers.
- Mechanical and electrical skills to perform minor maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints & electrical diagrams and schematics.
- Demonstrates advanced ability to plan and execute assignments.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments.
- Able to work independently and supervise technical contractors.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Two (2) year technical degree with minimum five (5) years experience working in a power plant environment, or minimum seven (10) years experience operating power plants.
- Valid NY State driver’s license required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to access all areas of the plant and conduct physical evaluations of grounds and equipment including ability to climb and work at high elevations.
- Must be able to perform physically demanding work while wearing a respirator.
- Ability to work a 24/7 rotating shift schedule.
