This is skilled work in municipal communications.
An employee in this class installs, maintains, and repairs various telephone and other communications equipment in City owned or occupied buildings.
Works under the general supervision of the Communications Supervisor, exercising independent judgment in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the job. Assignments are sometimes hazardous and performed under adverse weather conditions.
Characteristic Work
Assists supervisor in evaluating project to determine the services and equipment needed for installation. Installs and maintains telephone, video, alarm, data outlet, connectors, and distribution and station cables such as twisted pair, coax, and fiber optics at each level of building to install various distribution frames and auxiliary equipment for voice, data, alarm, paging, and video services. Installs, maintains, and repairs various voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and video over internet protocol (video over IP) and electronic components i.e., video, paging, ringers, modems, and key telephone systems. Uses computer terminal or laptop to make changes, backups, additions and deletions to VoIP, video, and key phone systems; prepares system backup and makes system status inquiries. Installs, tests, terminates, splices, and maintains underground and overhead copper and fiber optic cable, fire alarm boxes and public address systems which may require working from ladders or scaffolding. Operates and works from bucket truck to install and repair telephone cable, fiber optic cable, and video cameras. Drives service vehicles to and from various job sites; maintains stock parts on vehicle. Responds to emergency calls to restore the proper functioning of communications equipment. Prepares and maintains a variety of manual and computerized records, reports, and maps. May occasionally work as a member of a line crew. Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of three years of paid experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of communications equipment, including a minimum of one year of paid experience with electronic key, PBX, or VoIP telephone equipment. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license. Possession of or must obtain within 120 days of employment a valid State of Ohio class B commercial driver’s license.
Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, procedures, hazard, and safety precautions associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of various communications equipment such as public-address, security, alarm, video, data, and telephone systems.
Skill in the use of tools, equipment and reference materials used with various communications systems. Ability to work from schematic drawings. Ability to effectively establish, update and maintain manual and computerized records. Ability to correctly identify color coded wire. Ability to work at heights, working from ladders, bucket trucks or scaffolding. Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and construction equipment. Competitive Examination Process
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination, which may include a performance test, with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.
RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
DRIVER’S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver’s license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver’s License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
