Description
This position assists in the management and direction of Park Maintenance operations. The Assistant Superintendent of Park Maintenance supervises a staff of 20 to 60 employees, varying throughout the year, including Foresters, Horticulturalists, Turf Specialists, Security, Heavy and Light Machine Operators, Utility Workers, Truck Driver, Laborers and Seasonal Laborers. Duties include assisting the Superintendent in providing a safe, functional and aesthetic recreational experience for the general public in City parks. The position is also responsible for providing the highest value street and park tree population for costs incurred and for improving the quality of trees to create a safe and pleasing urban environment. The Assistant Superintendent represents the Park Maintenance area in the absence of the Superintendent as needed.
Examples of Duties

  • Assists in overseeing City park maintenance by establishing high level standards, protocols and procedures. Schedules, trains and manages staff to ensure that standards are met.
  • Assists with implementing the Parks and Recreation goals through Park Maintenance strategic plan, projects and programs activities. Manages, leads, directs and schedules employees in their work activities in alignment with division/department and goals and plans.
  • Supervises staff, monitoring and evaluating their performance against both operational and developmental goals.
  • Advises, trains and coaches staff on supervisory, safety and technical issues as appropriate, recommending and directing staff to appropriate training as needed.
  • Exercises the authority to make recommendations concerning employment, dismissal, reprimands and related actions to the Superintendent in consultation with Human Resources Director.
  • Prepares, updates and interprets a variety of regularly scheduled and ad hoc reports. Researches ways to improve maintenance, inventories, ordinances, etc.
  • Assists the Superintendent with planning, assigning, prioritizing and scheduling of forestry work orders. Assists with new tree orders, inspection and maintenance of all City trees.
  • Coordinates and communicates with other employees, divisions, and departments to accomplish tasks and organizational goals. Responds to requests for information from other employees, divisions, departments, administration, elected officials, members of the general public and external organizations as appropriate.
  • Assists with budgeting and with managing the division budget.
  • Coordinates the park and right-of-way mowing schedules. Inspects work performed and advises on work methods. Responds to and resolves complaints from City stakeholders.
  • Represents the Park Maintenance area in the absence of the Superintendent as needed.

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Position related college courses, experience or training in such areas as turf management, forestry, natural resource management, construction trades, park management or related field highly desired.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in park maintenance with at least 3 years of supervisory experience required.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain Applicator’s Chemical Spray License and Certified Playground Safety Inspector License required.

  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee works in an office and uses common office equipment including telephones and computers. Work is also performed outdoors under a wide variety of conditions which may include heat, cold, fair and poor weather and storms. Employee is regularly required to travel throughout the City, walk through parks, construction sites and on public streets. Work requires lifting, reaching, kneeling, squatting and bending. Must be able to sit, use hands and fingers, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, see, speak and hear. Employee must be available to work as needed outside of regular office hours including weekends and evenings or nights.
