Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The Chief Data Officer of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Jeff Leek, established the Fred Hutch Data Science Lab (DaSL) to develop and support the overall data strategy for the organization. The mission of the Data Science Lab to ensure an effective data ecosystem at Fred Hutch by developing a modern, well documented, well implemented, overall data strategy that evolves with the needs and capabilities of those leveraging data at Fred Hutch regardless of “where they live” from the clinic to the research groups. We believe focusing on people is critical in building a strong, dynamic community united around using data to improve human health and cancer care. The Software and Reproducibility Software Developer works with other DaSL staff to build and share efficient software, containerize software, and support CI/testing of software and workflow resources created by DaSL. Develops software and tooling to facilitate multimodal clinical data integration, data munging and data formatting to feed and coordinate data between DaSL’s data resources and IT supported data sources and research applications.
Responsibilities
- Manages and maintains our translational research oriented WDL workflow and Dockerhub resources to ensure they are well versioned, documented and tested
- Develops CI/testing approaches and sets up code management systems and processes
- Coordinates validation, sharing and updating of WDL workflows in public repositories
- Provides expertise through DaSL’s consulting program for efficient code development to the research community such as introduction to approaches to parallelization, documentation, and basic software development practices.
- Publishes R or Python packages on online open source repositories (such as CRAN, PyPI) for working with multimodal clinical data to integrate data provenance/documentation, data governance (e.g. patient consent, de-identification processes) and other data management processes into data analysis workflows.
- Participates in development of lightweight web applications (e.g. shiny, flask) and prototypes UIs for various DaSL efforts.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
- Bachelor’s degree in statistics, data science, computer science or other related field or equivalent experience.
- Ability to effectively communicate asynchronously with collaborators and DaSL staff using Slack, Teams, and other software supporting documentation and sharing used in the group.
- Ability to prioritize written documentation and communication with attention to multiple audiences and creating broad understanding across groups.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with audiences with a wide range of data and/or software/coding expertise.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to change, to work independently, part of a multi-disciplinary group with DaSL staff as well as external partners.
- Prior work experience in the above requirements: Minimum of 6 years for Software and Reproducibility Software Developer III or Minimum of 10 years for Software and Reproducibility Software Developer IV.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with development and containerization of software in a biomedical research context.
- Extensive experience with either R or Python and willingness to use either.
- Experience with scientific programming.
- Demonstrated prior experience with the development and maintenance of open source software.
- Demonstrated experience with version control and collaboration via GitHub

The annual base salary range for this position will be based on experience and qualifications.
- Software and Reproducibility Software Developer III annual base salary range for this position is from $106,427 to $168,223.
- Software and Reproducibility Software Developer IV annual base salary range for this position is from $123,203 to $194,739.
