The City of Palo Alto is seeking experienced transportation planners who enjoy working in a dynamic, vibrant community. In this unique opportunity, the Office of Transportation has multiple vacancies, which can be filled at Associate Planner, Planner or Senior Planner.
The Office of Transportation improves the safety of the users of all modes of transportation, reduces reliance on single-occupancy vehicles, addresses congestion, and improves mobility to support an integrated transportation system that serves local, regional, and intercity travel. The City of Palo Alto is in the top 5 US cities with the highest proportion of adult commuters who travel by bicycle, and the Office of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program supports student bicycle use of over 50% in local public middle and high schools.
The Senior Planner positions available in the Office of Transportation are focused on projects and programs related to the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan, Sustainability & Climate Action Plan, and forthcoming Vision Zero/Safety Action Plan. In addition, the Office of Transportation seeks to fill an Associate Planner position centered on development review and TDM planning that also includes a variety of other projects ranging from GIS mapping to the siting of bicycle parking.

IDEAL CANDIDATES
The ideal candidates will possess the following:
- Ability to write clearly and communicate effectively; ability to prepare and write high quality staff reports, professional documents, and communications;
- Ability to handle a variety of assignments and adapt quickly to changing priorities and assignments;
- Strong technical skills; familiarity and experience with GIS, data analysis, and transportation engineering knowledge highly desirable;
- A strong customer service focus and superior interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, management, elected officials, community members, and representatives of public and regulatory agencies;
- For Senior Planner or Principal planner, strong project management skills; experience with development of transportation plans or in coordinating the planning and design of transportation projects.
Depending on candidates’ qualifications, positions may be filled at either the Associate Planner ($46.42-$56.99), Planner ($49.61-$60.91) or Senior Planner ($57.30-$70.35) level.

Minimum Qualifications
For Associate Planner:
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Studies or related field from an accredited college or university, and
- Two years of related experience in urban, conservation, or planning
For Planner:
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or related field from an accredited college or university, and
- Three years of suitable professional experience in urban planning. An advanced degree is highly desirable
For Senior Planner:
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Historic Preservation or a directly related field from an accredited college or university. An advanced degree is highly desirable, and
- Five years of suitable professional experience in urban planning (or substitute for up to two years of experience a master’s degree in planning or a related field).
Special Requirements: All positions require possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
