Job Description

The Assistant Director of Communications and New Digital Media conveys the stories of DU’s Division of Athletics’ student-athletes and coaches through diverse content, media interviews, internal and external video production, website development and social media to increase opportunities of exposure for assigned intercollegiate sport programs. This position will have primary coverage over Denver’s 2023 national semifinalist women’s lacrosse program, men’s OR women’s basketball, volleyball and two non-ticketed sports to be determined throughout the interview process.

Essential Functions

Communication

  • Direct all communications efforts for assigned sport programs by providing overall direction of public relations, media relations and sports information efforts
  • Maintain an overall relationship with local, regional and national media outlets
  • Serve as primary communication liaison for these media outlets as well as conference offices, the NCAA and College Sports Communicators
  • Brainstorm and execute social media plans for assigned sports

Sports Information

  • Oversee assigned sport programs as sports information director which includes, but it not limited to: write, edit and disseminate press releases and feature stories, as well as design media brochures and game programs
  • Answer media questions, plan photography sessions, and cover assigned sporting events.
  • Coordinate media relations, social media and statistical services for all home contests
  • Travel to postseason events with specified teams to establish good rapport with media assigned to cover University of Denver intercollegiate programs locally, regionally and nationally
  • Serve as liaison to opposing institutions, media, coaches, conference offices and the NCAA relative to exchanging statistical data and information related to sport-specific honors
  • Assist in the nomination and publicity of student-athletes for various honors and awards

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in an athletic media relations or communications field
  • Strong language and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including previous experience with Adobe Creative Suite products
  • Ability to manage several on-going projects simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience in an athletic media relations or communications field
  • Graphic design skills
  • Basic video editing experience (through Adobe Premiere preferred)
  • Experience with Sidearm websites
  • Experience with NCAA Live Stats software
