About The Transportation Department:

The Transportation Department’s mission is to facilitate safe and secure commercial transportation on public highways, railroads and transportation facilities, as well as to promote quality and equitable service in a proactive manner for the public and commercial carriers in the household goods, bus and ferry boat industries. This is accomplished through reduction and prevention of crashes involving commercial motor vehicles, reduction and prevention of hazardous materials incidents, development of consumer protection regulations, and resolution of consumer and carrier complaints.

What You’ll Do:

In this position as a Hazmat Specialist 2 in Motor Carrier Enforcement you will:

  • Conduct Hazardous Materials Vehicle Inspections
  • Complete Compliance Investigation of Motor Carriers
  • Complete New Entrant Safety Audits of new Motor Carriers
  • Complete Shipper Investigations of non-Motor Carriers
  • Complete investigation reports with investigator narratives
  • Public Education and Outreach to large groups
  • Comprehensive Investigation of commercial vehicle crashes, spills or release of hazardous materials
  • Attend training and maintain certification required for the job classification

REPORT TO WORK LOCATION: The employee’s home will be the primary work location.* The employee’s home must be
located within 30 air miles of 373 S. High St., Columbus, OH 43215.

Qualifications
48 mos. trg. or exp. in commercial transportation safety practices & procedures; 12 mos. trg. or exp. in hazardous materials regulation compliance/enforcement; valid driver’s license.

-Or 24 months as Hazardous Materials Investigation Specialist 1.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Preferred Qualifications:
– Experience as a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) mechanic
– Certified to conduct Hazardous Materials Inspection by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
– Certified to conduct Cargo Tank Inspections by FMCSA
– Certified to conduct Other Bulk Package Inspections by FMCSA
– Certified as a Hazardous Materials technician
– Completed Firefighter training
– Work experience as a Hazardous Materials truck driver
– Experience wearing personal protective equipment (PPE)
