Position: Chassis Engineer – Design Release Engineer (Wheels and Tires)

Role 1 (Wheel Design Release Engineer) / Role 2 (Tire Design Release Engineer)

Reports to – Senior Manager Chassis – Wheels & Tires

Position Purpose

This position will support design and validation activity for new wheel, tire, service kits & wheel tire assembly program product development for electric vehicles. This position will work in a team environment, capturing requirements & attributes, ensuring these requirements & attributes are achieved, seeking solutions to technical challenges, and utilizing lean principles to enhance the tire offering.

Major Responsibilities

Design and implement tire wheel systems, integrating with chassis component systems from concept to production.
Create and develop engineering specification packages that effectively communicate to internal and external partners to ensure products meet given project parameters.
Project Management of wheel and/or tire development & validation
Complete and release wheel, tire, service kit and/or tire wheel assembly documentation, including 2D drawings.
Manage designed parts in the virtual environment and support virtual build and release activities.
Develop collaborative relationships with wheel and tire suppliers & tire assemblers and manage them to deliver projects on time and to specification.
Tire DRE Role: Supporting initial tire submissions, working alongside the Vehicle Dynamics Team, translating vehicle level requirements into tire component requirements, planning and implementation of measures.
Wheel DRE Role: Supporting initial concept models, working alongside our studio engineering and design team to develop the feasibility of wheel models, into feasible designs that meet cost/mass/manufacturability targets, and beyond into production release and validation.
Effectively balance multiple projects, responsibilities, and tasks simultaneously
Tire DRE role will require ability to discuss, understand and meet tire attributes requirements with internal stakeholders.
Wheel DRE role will require ability to discuss, understand and find agreeable solutions with studio design & CMF stakeholders whilst upholding feasibility, cost, timing, and mass targets.
Role may require design, release & validation of service kit parts such as spare wheel, spare tire, jack, tire mobility kits and stowage systems (working with our packaging team)
Meet program timing & budget constraints whilst achieving vehicle dynamic, crash, aero, NVH and chassis attribute targets.
Define validation procedures to ensure only optimized, integrated and robust designs are released.
Work in a team environment towards bringing new product and technologies and techniques to the process.
Travel as necessary to support tire testing, supplier visits & production engineering support.
Required Skills

Bachelor”s degree or master”s degree in automotive or mechanical engineering required.
Tire design and/or development experience preferred (for a Tire DRE role)
Wheel design and/or development experience preferred (for a Wheel DRE role)
Must be familiar with DFMEA/DVPR usage and review of these documents.
Experience using CAD (ideally CATIA V6) or CAE is preferred
Solid fundamental knowledge of chassis design, vehicle dynamics, wheel & tire alignment, tire uniformity and tire design contributors to vehicle level performance
Understanding of wheel & tire design standards & code (ETRTO, TR&A etc.) & homologation
Candidates should be self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced team environment.
Excellent communication skills, able to interact effectively with domestic and international teammates & suppliers.
Must be a self-starter, use initiative and engineering judgement.
Ability to interpret data and solve complex problems using first principles.
