Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Germanna Community College is currently seeking a Communications Dispatch Officer. The officer will provide emergency police communications to ensure the department’s public safety needs are met. This position is open to current Germanna employees only.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates flow of information for the police, security and facilities operations of the college
  • Ensures compliance with CJIS Security Standards as well as FCC rules and regulations
  • Completes reports in a clear, concise, timely manner
  • Assists students, faculty, staff, and visitors by providing information regarding parking regulations, building, classroom and office location camps safety and security procedures
  • Ensures all campus facilities and equipment are safe and secure

Special Assignments

KSA’s/Required Qualifications

  • 21 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License with clean driving history
  • Successful completion of in-depth background investigation to include: reference checks, FBI fingerprint based criminal history check, degree validation, DMV (driving) record checks, license verification, drug screen, phycological and a medical examination
  • Never have been convicted of a felony, misdemeanor for a crime of domestic violence or a crime involving moral turpitude
  • Considerable working knowledge of public safety radio codes/procedures and voice communications systems
  • Working knowledge of customer service practices and principles
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications to compile, tabulate and report information
  • Knowledge of statute enforcement, safety and security concepts, principles, procedures and techniques
  • Ability to function mentally and physically under stressful and/or crisis situations
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing, with a diverse population, to conduct preliminary investigations, gather information and write factual reports, and to explain and ensure compliance with policies, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification as a Campus Security Officer, emergency communications dispatcher and VCIN Level “A” terminal operator as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services ( DCJS ) and Virginia State Police
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of public safety/security vehicles, communication equipment, alarm systems, and other types of safety and security equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, to react appropriately in routine and emergency situations, to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a diverse population, to gather information and write factual reports, and to explain and ensure compliance with policies, rules, and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement communications policies and procedures
  • Ability to multi-task, utilizing the computer, radio and telephonic equipment simultaneously and be mentally and physically fit to perform job duties and able to comply with all college/department policies

Additional Considerations

  • Emergency dispatching/Public Safety experience in a public service community policing oriented organization
  • Public Safety experience in a college/university environment, and successful completion of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services ( DCJS ) Basic Campus Security Officer training
  • Basic skills in the operation of personal computers, VCIN / NCIC terminals, records management systems, radio equipment, public safety vehicles, various alarm systems, emergency alert systems and CCTV equipment
  • Working knowledge of statute enforcement; safety and security concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques
