JOB SUMMARY

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position at Edison School of the Arts, Inc. is pivotal for the school’s overall success. In collaboration with the board, the CEO ensures the school’s relevance to the community, upholding its mission, vision, and accountability to diverse constituents. This visionary leader will provide direction and support to the board while overseeing management and daily operations aligned with board-established policies and advancing racial equity. The CEO fosters academic excellence, character development, and a strong sense of community among students, staff, and parents.

Edison is an Innovation Network School with full operational autonomy to operate under an agreement with Indianapolis Public Schools. Serving the entire city of Indianapolis and some surrounding counties, Edison welcomes students from all backgrounds. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, the Edison team actively engages in weekly scheduled, robust professional development to foster mastery of Arts Integration.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic, Visionary Leadership:

  • Serve as the school’s chief arts education advocate.
  • Advance clear vision and mission, fostering collaboration and support within the school community and stakeholders.
  • Implement and monitor the long-term strategic plan and align it with academic and operational goals.
  • Identify Strengths, Risks, and Opportunities for the Edison community to develop comprehensive improvement plans.
  • Lead the development and execution of innovative educational programs and promote continuous improvement and high student achievement.
  • Demonstrate dynamic leadership, effectively motivating teams to achieve shared objectives.
  • Establish clearly defined roles and responsibilities for all administrative team members to ensure stability, educational success, and student engagement.
  • Support board in determining the mission, vision, and short- and long-term goals of Edison School of the Arts.
  • Assist the board in monitoring Edison’s relevancy, effectiveness, and results, informing them about important factors influencing the school.
  • Identify problems, opportunities, and trends, facilitating discussions and providing insights to support effective policy-making.

Instructional Leadership:

  • Provide oversight of instructional leadership, promote effective teaching practices tailored to meet the needs of a diverse student population, and foster professional growth among faculty and staff.
  • Manage the performance of the Principal/Director of Academics, ensuring accountability and supporting short- and long-term academic goals.
  • In collaboration with school-level leadership teams, set direction and lead instructional improvement efforts.
  • Monitor and analyze student performance data to identify areas for improvement and develop targeted interventions.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment, supporting the social-emotional development of all students.
  • Supervise teacher and staff recruitment, selection, training, professional development, and evaluation processes.
  • Oversee and ensure timely, effective compliance with all IEP/State Educational requirements.

Operational Management and Finances:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget, providing financial leadership for sustainability and aligned resource allocation.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain top talent, fostering continuous improvement in school leadership.
  • Collaborate with the board, providing regular updates on school performance, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Demonstrate efficiency, executing tasks proactively and in a timely manner.
  • Solve operational challenges, finding innovative solutions to enhance school functioning.
  • Ensure program quality, stability, and sustainability through standards, controls, and regular evaluation.
  • Foster a supportive work environment, recruiting, retaining, and supporting quality staff and volunteers.
  • Promote cost-effective programs and services while maintaining acceptable quality levels.
  • Assure the development and operation of gift management systems and reports for quality decision-making.
  • Review all monthly/annual allocations of funds administered by IPS, which are passed through to Edison to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Cultivate and engage with local, regional, and national philanthropic organizations which support charter schools and arts integration education.

Governance and Legal Compliance:

  • Help the board define and understand its role, responsibilities, and accountabilities, including those of committees and individual members, and facilitate regular performance evaluations.
  • Collaborate with the board chair to enable effective governance functions, ensuring optimal performance by the board, its committees, and individual members.
  • Assist the board chair in focusing board attention on long-range strategic issues.
  • Manage the board’s due-diligence process, ensuring timely consideration of critical matters.
  • Work with board officers and committee chairs to engage each board member’s expertise and encourage their active participation.
  • Actively recruit and recommend volunteers to serve on the board and its committees that reflect the racial diversity of the student population.
  • Ensure the timely filing of all legal and regulatory documents and monitor compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Community Engagement:

  • Foster a culture of engagement and transparency and build strong relationships with staff, parents, students, and the broader community to garner support for Edison’s mission.
  • Represent the school at community events, public meetings, and relevant forums, enhancing its visibility and reputation.
  • Collaborate with external partners to provide students with valuable enrichment programs, internships, and college/career readiness opportunities.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the school, advocating for educational equity and the unique needs of charter schools while actively integrating Edison into the community through effective marketing and communications activities.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of three years of senior management experience.
  • Experience in arts education advocacy, a demonstrated commitment and passion to arts integration, ensuring partnership with culturally appropriate arts organizations.
  • Proven strategic and visionary leadership track record, fostering collaboration and support within the school community and stakeholders.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop comprehensive plans to ensure the organization’s long-term success.
  • Experience implementing and monitoring long-term strategic plans aligned with academic and operational goals.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify strengths, risks, and improvement opportunities within the school community.
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills for effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience supporting a board of directors in determining mission, vision, and goals while providing important insights.
  • Strong problem-solving and trend analysis skills to facilitate effective policy-making.
  • Ability to lead the development and execution of innovative educational programs, driving continuous improvement and high student achievement.
  • Instructional leadership experience, promoting effective teaching practices, and fostering professional growth among faculty and staff.

Location: This is an on-site position. The successful candidate must reside in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Benefits

The expected salary range for this role is $140,000 – $160,000. Starting salary is commensurate with experience.
