The Communications Coordinator – Strategic Messaging supports Columbus City Schools and the Department of Communications and Engagement by creating and executing communication strategies for internal and external audiences that align with the district’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities. This position will lead and implement the strategic approach to executive communications, internal communications, and policy/legislative communications.

  • Develop communications including but not limited to speeches, remarks, talking points, backgrounders, event briefings, and online and social media content, including researching and coordinating event details as well as conducting extensive research for writing materials to support the Superintendent/CEO, senior leaders, and department initiatives.
  • Support the Department of Communications and Engagement with editing, writing, and proofreading to facilitate special projects and promote district initiatives.
  • Write, edit, manage, and send district- and community-wide emails on behalf of the Superintendent/CEO.
  • Working cross-functionally to develop speeches, remarks, social media content, talking points, presentations, videos, visuals, and other executive communications materials.
  • Maintain a comprehensive editorial calendar of executive speaking engagements, manage review processes, and meet deadlines.
  • Create and execute impactful internal and employee communications strategies.
  • Prioritize everyday language to connect with audiences across all levels of the organization.
  • Manage the oversight of internal email distribution, measuring and analyzing appropriate performance data.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Policy and Government Affairs to effectively understand and communicate relevant Board of Education policies and legislative updates to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Research and connect relevant policy and legislation to the strategic priorities and mission of the district.
  • Attend off-hours district meetings and events as directed.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure efficient and effective communications and engagement programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, public relations, or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) or more years of experience in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Detail-oriented with proven excellent writing, grammar, and editing skills.
  • Flexible problem-solver and self-starter.
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal skills, including effective presentation skills.
  • Broad knowledge of Ohio K-12 educational programs, services, legislative requirements, policies, and current issues.
  • Ability to write about complex issues and convey in an easy-to-understand manner in speeches, remarks, emails, and other written content.
  • Demonstrated ability to write under deadline pressure.
  • Comfort with reviewing and explaining numbers, graphs, and data points to internal and external audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex roles and responsibilities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively serve as a leader and member of a team.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively and work productively with all levels of district staff.
  • Analytical ability to develop plans of action to address a variety of issues and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive matters
  • Demonstrated ability to use information provided through evaluation feedback from supervisor to improve performance.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Tools/Equipment Use: Desktop PC with keyboard and mouse, laptop, scanner, calculator, software, desk, and adjustable chair.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, bending, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of a mouse; occasional reaching
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting and carrying (less than 10 pounds)
  • Environment: Works in an office setting; may require occasional irregular hours and/or prolonged hours.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
