Description
The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) is seeking an enthusiastic and qualified GIS Intern to join our GIS team within the Data & Mapping Team. A strong candidate will possess the right combination of technical skills, creativity, a collaborative spirit, and self-motivation; and will have a passion for using spatial data to understand and address community needs, with a particular focus on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The GIS intern will assist in supporting the spatial analysis and mapping needs of the Data & Mapping Team as well as other MORPC departments. Increasingly, our mapping work is becoming more digital with a focus on web map creation and the publication of spatial data through MORPC’s open data portal. Helping to maintain these online resources is also a key role for the GIS intern position. This is a year-round internship position.

The Data & Mapping Team manages MORPC’s internal data resources and provides data collection, analysis, and visualization support to the agency’s other departments in areas ranging from Planning & Sustainability to Transportation & Infrastructure Development, to Residential Services, to Communication & Engagement. Externally, we work directly with local governments, community partners, and residents to meet their data and mapping needs. The Data & Mapping Team is also responsible for furthering , which outlines our role as a regional leader in the data analytics space.

Definition:
The GIS intern position will utilize college training to assist with regional GIS data and mapping applications. Work is completed under the direct supervision of other full-time staff and is guided by higher-level planners on a frequent basis.
Examples of Duties

  • Collect, manipulate, and update spatial data for Central Ohio region.
  • Create file geodatabases and schemas.
  • Update and review existing datasets.
  • Research data resources and new GIS tools
  • Create simple maps and spreadsheets for public/member/staff requests.
  • Work with GIS staff on special projects
  • Actively support MORPC’s Affirmative Action Plan, Equal Employment Opportunity Policy, Diversity program, Code of Ethics and other MORPC policies

Typical Qualifications
MORPC uses ArcGIS 10.5 geodatabases, SQLServer, ArcServer, ArcGIS On-line, Open Data, Microsoft Excel, and Access in its GIS applications. Experience with ArcGIS and Excel are required. Candidate must have experience and a strong interest in the art of data management and map making. Knowledge of basic math and cartography is required. Knowledge of Access, Model Builder, SQL, Python, and Arcade are helpful, but not required.

This position requires effective communication skills (written and oral) and strong organizational skills. The individual must be a team player and can establish good working relationships with peers, as well as work independently and interact with staff and the public in a courteous and professional manner.
Acceptable Experience and Training:
Must be a currently enrolled student; a graduate student or upper class of a 2- or 4-year degree program in Planning, Geographic Information Systems (or related field) is preferred. A combination of training, experience, and education equivalent to this will be considered.

Essential Functions:
Selected candidate must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Ohio. This is a part-time position at 20 hours per week with a hybrid work schedule.
