Description

Patuxent River Park, located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, is seeking a Research Assistant-Seasonal to co-lead the analysis and writing of a peer-reviewed publication on Sora (Porzana carolina) sexing by morphometrics, determined with DNA sampling to be submitted to a scientific journal. The field-based research has been completed.

The primary focus of this position is to work on the data analysis and publication. This is the perfect opportunity to jump start a career and become a co-author on a peer-reviewed paper of original wetland research.

This position pays at a rate of $17.00 per hour.

This position will primarily work Tuesday-Saturday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Occasional evening work may be required. Ad hoc telework is permitted.

Housing is not provided.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Process data using R statistical analysis
  • Create tables, charts, and other graphics depicting data
  • Under guidance, draft a comprehensive research paper using strong scientific and technical writing skills for publication in one or more peer-reviewed scientific journals

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Wildlife Science, or related field
  • Must possess excellent scientific and technical writing skills
  • Must have R statistical analysis and programming skills, preferably related to Motus
  • Motus wildlife tracking system experience
  • Knowledge of Movebank
  • Interest in ornithology
  • Effective communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Teams
  • Ability to meet deadlines.

Supplemental Information
This position accrues paid sick leave up to 40 hours/year. No other benefits are included.

Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
