The Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) serves as the catalyst for enhancing the quality of the undergraduate student experience while promoting on-time graduation for all undergraduate students at IUPUI. 3 units report up to the Division: University College, Honors College and the Institute for Engaged Learning.
The Office of Communications and Digital Strategy serves as the central communications team for the Division of Undergraduate Education, providing marketing and communication leadership, strategy, services, and education to division stakeholders.
Job Summary
The Content Specialist is a creative and detail-oriented individual with a superior ability to tell stories and convey information in clear, concise, and engaging ways. They research, develop, write, and edit original content for print and digital materials on behalf of the IUPUI Division of Undergraduate Education and its offices and programs. Content may include website content, mass emails, copy for marketing materials, press releases and online articles, newsletters, videos, social media content, and reports.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Crafts messages and content that resonate with target audiences, and understands the need to vary content across platforms.
- Adheres to editorial style guides and has a keen knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting.
- Collaborates with division stakeholders and internal marketing and digital media teams.
- Works in support of projects led by the marketing and digital media teams and will occasionally lead projects.
- Works with colleagues within the office and other division stakeholders to identify and meet content needs for client projects.
- Writes and edits basic and complex communications by established deadlines for a variety of audiences and for distribution across print and digital platforms on behalf of the division and its units.
- Corrects basic and complex grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and syntax errors.
- Leads writing and editing projects initiated by the Office of Communications and Digital Strategy such as internal emails, websites, and print materials. This includes planning, developing, and publishing internal and external communications. Example projects include, division news stories, internal e-newsletters for employees, mass emails to University College students, and division-internal websites.
- Supervises and manages a team of student interns to support writing and editing needs.
- Manages the division’s social media accounts and strategy.
- Provides training and information to division stakeholders regarding content writing and editing best practices, guidelines, and expectations.
General Responsibilities
- Writes and edits clear, informative written content for various communications needs, audiences, and publication formats, assessing for relevance, accuracy, and appropriateness; tailors the degree of copyediting to a project’s specific needs.
- Independently corrects basic and complex grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and syntax errors and performs edits that improve overall writing quality of communications and ensure alignment with university mission, strategies, objectives, and brand and accessibility guidelines.
- Performs reviews of peer writing to ensure grammar, quality, tone, and level of depth are sufficient; may also review against requirements for specific publications, including content, length, brand guidelines, and deadline specifications.
- Regularly consults with writers, printers, faculty, staff, and/or other stakeholders to ensure adherence to writing and publications deadlines.
- Identifies user and audience needs and analyzes usage of existing content in order to identify content gaps; plans, develops, and publishes internal and external communications.
- Drafts sample communications to be reviewed with manager at project deadline checkpoints.
- May provide guidance to other Writing and Editing Specialists.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, public relations, or related field.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This is a Temporary Full-Time Position with an end date of 1 year after start date.
