UCM Communications Assistant – FWS

Summary/Objective

The University Communications Office seeks to hire federal work study students for the upcoming academic year to support both internal and external communications. The positions will assist with the daily activities of the office including writing, editing, researching, and analyzing news stories and topics; tracking and assisting with student media requests; creating and assembling press kits; identifying and targeting appropriate media contacts; documenting news media placements; working on special projects and general office duties.

University Communications works daily with campus constituents and partners to publicize all aspects of the university through media outlets, the university’s website and internal messaging. The office consults with campus offices, schools, and departments on media relations, strategic communication strategies, and web communications to promote professors, programs, research, and events to internal audiences and the news media.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • These positions are restricted to students with a Federal Work Study Award.

Salary Range

  • $17.00 – $18.00/hour.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Majors/minors including but not limited to business, communications, marketing and journalism are helpful.
  • Working knowledge of the news and media industries, public affairs and familiarity with higher education desired.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and comfortable in a fast-paced, newsroom-style office atmosphere.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines while paying close attention to detail and work independently to complete designated assignments.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Proficient computer skills including the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Photoshop, and social media. Ability to use both Macs and PCs.
  • Previous experience working in a PR agency, newsroom or other communications office preferred.
  • Must be curious, pro-active and have a can-do attitude.
