General Statement of Duties/Supervision
Assists with recreational activities for pre-teens and teens at the Tumwater Youth Program (TYP). Other duties include gym monitoring for the youth basketball program, working with middle school students in the after school program, special events and summer camp programs.
Supervision: Supervision is received through regular contact with supervisor. The Recreation Program Aide I’s discretion is limited by onsite supervision and routine procedures of the center.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is entry level work among staff who design and conduct routine, daily recreation activities of a community center and late night programs.
Essential Job Duties
- Assist with TYP. After School Program, special events, sports, and summer camp programs.
- Assists with Friday late night programs of the Tumwater Youth Program (TYP).
- Assist with Middle School After School Program
- Gym Monitoring for Tumwater Youth Basketball Program
- Communicates with other recreation staff, volunteers and city personnel as needed.
- Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by the supervisors at the center such as work on special events and training.
Working Conditions: Outside work may be required in all types of weather. Work involves occasional exposure to program participants. Work requires occasional long periods of standing or walking. Frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds. Work frequently takes place in noisy, active settings which demand concentration despite numerous interruptions and distractions.
Selection Criteria
Knowledge: Some knowledge of recreation programs and activities and of effective leadership techniques relevant to youth and teen programs.
Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective cooperative working relationships with the public and staff; to work independently while remaining part of the larger “team”; to respond to questions and complaints in a courteous and tactful manner; to accurately follow written and verbal instructions; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications: High School graduation and experience working with youth and teens.
Preferred Qualifications: Some experience in a comparable program with related recreation education.
Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid Washington state driver’s license or otherwise establish the ability to perform the job in an equally efficient manner without driving. Must be able to work varying schedules to include evening and weekend assignments. Food Handler’s card, First Aid Certificate, CPR and AED Certificate required within six months of hire.
