Special Assistant to the Deputy Borough President

The Bronx Borough President advises the Mayor of New York City, comments on land-use items in their borough, advocates borough needs in the annual municipal budget process, appoint a select number of officials and community board members, and serves as an ex officio member of various boards and committees. The Office of the Bronx Borough President is seeking a full-time Special Assistant to the Deputy Borough President. The Special Assistant will have the opportunity to work with units across the agency to support a broad range of projects and work with external partners. In addition, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to multi-task and coordinate shifting priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; strong problem-solving and decision-making skills; excellent interpersonal skills and organizational savvy; and demonstrate confidentiality and discretion.

Responsibilities:
• Provide high-level assistance to the Deputy Borough President
• Manage the planning, execution, and staffing of special events, forums, town halls, and roundtables as needed under the unit’s purview.
• Attend meetings and events with or on behalf of the Deputy Borough President (DBP)
• Prepare, edit, and generate memorandums speeches, talking points, and memos, as well as creative and technical content in both English and Spanish.
• Conduct research and gather information for special priority projects and perform other assignments of confidentiality and/or sensitive nature as directed.
• Serve as the liaison between DBP and the Senior Leadership team (Directors), including coordinating and compiling information from units to ensure timely completion of deliverables and reports.
• Closely monitor and track tasks, deliverables, and deadlines.
• Support and work closely with the Administrative Assistant to ensure meetings are scheduled and modified as needed to meet the needs of the unit.
• Support the management of DBP’s social media profile and digital content.
• Conduct other duties as instructed and/or necessary to help keep the office performing at an efficient level in a high-speed environment.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.

Preferred Skills
• An advanced degree in public administration, public policy, management, political science, government, law, or a closely related field.
• Fluent in both English and Spanish
• Exceptional writing skills and ability to summarize complex concepts quickly, clearly, and concisely for audiences at all levels.
• Ability to work with substantial independence, take ownership of projects, and successfully manage multiple priorities under pressure.
• Solution-oriented thinking, intellectual curiosity, and ability to seek out innovative solutions to complex problems.
• Deep understanding of discretion and maintaining high levels of confidentiality
• Proven ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Dedication to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity, and compliance
• Proven decision-making and analytical skills.
• Experience working in a governmental setting and/or interest in local City Government is preferred.
• Occasional travel may be required (approximately 5-10%), including driving during evenings and weekends, depending on mission and assignment.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required, or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
• Strong computer skills. Knowledge of google docs, emails, excel, and Microsoft Word.
