Job Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and assess construction activities, generating daily inspection summaries and constructability evaluations. Common tasks involve supervising daily construction operations encompassing tasks like earthwork, erosion control, reinforced concrete, and equipment setup.
  • Oversee ongoing construction tasks to ensure adherence to specifications and contractual documents. Scrutinize coordinated sets of working blueprints. Evaluate moderately intricate shop drawings. Keep a daily work record. Escalate and report deviations from plans and specifications to managerial personnel. You will also participate in the review of submissions, aid in resolving RFI’s, and engage in other associated tasks.
  • Acquire familiarity with construction methodologies, design principles, TDOT (Tennessee Department of Transportation) Specifications, and documents. Comprehend standard procedures, protocols, and practices within an organization, preferably within the architecture/engineering sector. Ability to acquire knowledge through hands-on learning, observation, and active inquiry.
  • Gain familiarity with, or the aptitude to learn the utilization of tools and equipment such as, though not limited to, an air meter, slump cone, transit, level, and tape measure. Ability to utilize a computer for data entry and reporting when necessary.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal abilities. Capability to work autonomously. Proficiency in comprehending and conveying information verbally and in writing. Command over the structure and conventions of the English language, encompassing word meanings, spelling, composition guidelines, and grammar.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Successful completion of high school education (GED) and a minimum of 4 years of experience in construction/inspection within roadway projects; alternatively, completion of a 2 or 4-year engineering technology or engineering program is acceptable.
  • Prior exposure to TDOT or municipal roadway projects, involving the maintenance of daily records and reports pertaining to asphalt paving, concrete tasks, grading, structural work, and erosion control, is preferred.
  • Optional, but a distinct advantage, are TDOT CEI Certifications. Additional certifications and training programs may be required after hiring, as stipulated by OSHA, TDOT, or specific client prerequisites. Such certifications may encompass concrete and asphalt qualifications, erosion control, and safety training.
  • While not obligatory, preference is given to candidates with Level 1, and preferably Level 2, certification from the state’s Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control (EPSC) Training Program.

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly engage in sitting and utilizing hands for operation of objects, tools, or equipment. Ability to communicate verbally, perceive visual information, and hear, as well as reach with hands and arms, walk, stand, or stoop. Occasional lifting or moving of items weighing over 25 lbs may be necessary. Work Environment:

  • Predominantly field-based – outdoors; exposed to various environmental factors including humidity, dust, noise, and fluctuating temperatures. Work may occur in high traffic areas.
