The Illinois Department of Revenue is seeking to hire a Revenue Audit Supervisor to plan, monitor and direct the activities of a staff of Auditors engaged in performing field audits of Illinois and/or out-of-state taxpayers subject to one or more taxes administered by the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR). This position interprets and explains the proper application of Sales and Miscellaneous tax laws, rules, regulations and opinions. This position serves as working supervisor, assigning and reviewing subordinate work. This position performs pre-audit evaluations to establish suitability of cases for subordinate Auditor’s skill levels, as well as the scope and the procedures to be employed. This position may conduct post-audit conferences with taxpayers, or their representatives, to explain audit findings predicated on applicable tax laws rules, regulations, court decisions and precedents. This position confers by telephone or travels to taxpayer’s place of business to discuss and resolve technical or controversial tax issues with taxpayers and/or their representatives. This position confers with the manager to provide information as to status of ongoing audits, or to obtain guidance in resolving controversial or complex legal and/or technical tax problems. This position reviews and approves completed computerized audit reports. This position actively participates in providing classroom and on-the-job training of Trainees and Auditors. This position provides continuous communication and feedback to staff regarding employee performance.

- Confers with manager to provide information as to status of ongoing audits, or obtain guidance in resolving controversial or complex legal and/or technical tax problems.
- Reviews and approves completed computerized audit reports.
- Participates in classroom and on-the-job training of Trainees and Auditors.
- Provides continuous communication and feedback to subordinate staff.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a bachelor’s degree, including at least 12 semester hours of accounting courses.
- Requires four years of progressively responsible experience in the tax auditing of books, records and documents of corporations, partnerships and individuals.
Specialized Skills: Of the four years of experience, requires four years of experience in Sales & Miscellaneous Taxes, including two years as a Revenue Auditor III with lead/advanced auditor experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Four (4) years of experience working with Sales & Miscellaneous Taxes, i.e., reviewing tax records, conducting tax audits of businesses, interpreting and explaining the proper application of Sales and Miscellaneous tax laws, rules, regulations and opinions, etc.
- Two (2) years of experience working as a lead/advanced auditor to a team of lower-level auditors in an organization.
Conditions Of Employment
- Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires an appropriate, valid driver’s license.
- Requires the ability to use and secure a state issued mobile device, e.g., cellular phone, laptop computer, tablet, etc.
- This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
