The Virtualization Core Platform team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to work in the device virtualization technology area to help drive the development of the next generation of our platform. We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who can learn quickly, have dependable design skills, and have the proven ability to build and manage a dynamic team.

As a Principal Software Engineer Lead, you’ll be responsible for leading a team of engineers working on components of Microsoft’s virtualization platform. Your work will touch all aspects of device virtualization. You’ll be working closely with all of Microsoft’s key silicon partners to enable new hardware features and push the boundaries of performance, reliability, security, and more. Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:
- The ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experience coding, debugging, testing, and problem solving skills
- Proven communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work on a large codebase and willing to take on a wide variety of challenges
- Reliable understanding of systems software and hardware/software interaction
- A track record of solid results across multiple ship cycles
- Experience with hypervisors, kernel mode programming, containers, and/or security
- Thorough understanding of modern computer architectures found in desktop PCs and servers
Software Engineering IC6 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 – $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 – $304,200 per year. Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
