Position Information
The purpose of this classification is to drive/operate a van or other vehicle to transport passengers between various locations.
Job Summary
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Operates a van or other motor vehicle to transport clients, elderly citizens, handicapped persons, children, and other passengers to medical facilities, shopping facilities, senior center, schools, day care centers, places of employment, or other destinations according to schedule; picks up passengers from scheduled locations; assists elderly/disabled passengers and their packages into or out of vehicle.

Plans/organizes daily trip routes/schedules to pick up or drop off passengers; makes adjustments to planned routes/schedules due to traffic congestion, accidents, or other situations; plans field trips, chartered trips, or other activities as required.

Promotes positive customer relations and passenger comfort during trips; greets and converses with passengers; responds to questions and requests for assistance; provides information related to van routes, schedules, destinations, fares, local directions, and other information; assists clients in carrying, loading, or unloading packages/purchases.

Collects transportation fares/fees from passengers; calculates fares; counts/balances revenues, maintains records, and forwards as appropriate.

Assists disabled passengers or other passengers requiring assistance into or out of vehicle; operates motorized wheelchair lift; secures wheelchairs during transport; ensures use of seatbelts.

Monitors safety, welfare, and behavior of passengers on van; administers minor first aid or obtains emergency medical assistance when necessary; handles situations involving excessive noise, inappropriate language or actions, disruptive behavior, or other problems; maintains discipline and intervenes in fights as necessary; coordinates disciplinary issues as needed.

Follows established safety procedures and traffic laws; performs driving functions safely in various weather conditions; monitors traffic conditions surrounding van to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions; reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.

Conducts pre-trip inspections of vehicles to verify safety and proper operations or to identify potential problems; reports faulty equipment or operational problems.

Operates a variety of equipment and tools associated with department activities, which may include a multi-passenger van, multi-passenger bus, wheelchair lift, fire extinguisher, two-way radio, cleaning supplies, or first aid supplies.

Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, cleaning/sanitizing interior of vans, washing/cleaning exterior of vans, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning storage/work areas; monitors operations to maintain efficiency and safety and reports faulty equipment; schedules/coordinates periodic maintenance work.

Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, checklists, daily logs, inspection logs/reports, destination reports, vehicle maintenance reports, fare reports, accident reports, timesheets, or other documents.

Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, schedules, checklists, logs, lists, vehicle maintenance records, maps, directories, policies, procedures, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

Maintains records of trips, mileage, passengers, fares, vehicle maintenance, and other activities.

Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; responds to dispatched calls or requests for service/assistance.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, dispatchers, clients, passengers, the public, medical providers, community organizations, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of traffic laws, safety regulations, and other applicable laws, policies, procedures, and regulations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

Assignment to the Senior Services Department may include the following additional duties:
Assists with coordination of homebound delivered meals program for seniors, including assisting with packaging food for distribution, picking up food bank donation items, stocking kitchen shelves, cleaning and upkeep of the kitchen and kitchen equipment and delivering meals.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

This classification is designated as a safety sensitive position that is subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other drug testing methods as stated in policies adopted by Forsyth County concerning drug and alcohol.

Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include answering telephone calls, processing schedule cancellations or additions, setting up tables/chairs for meetings, or running errands.

Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in vehicle operation, defensive driving, and CPR/first aid; supplemented by 2 months previous experience and/or training involving van/bus driving, vehicle operation, or passenger transportation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess or obtain valid CPR and First Aid certification within three (3) months of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. May require possession and maintenance of a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).

Personal Leave Accrual

Personal leave shall be accrued as follows:

0 – 4 Years – 20 days per year – 6.16 hours per pay period
5 – 14 Years – 25 days per year – 7.70 hours per pay period
15+Years – 30 days per year – 9.24 hours per pay period

Medical Insurance
The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners offers employees a choice of two medical plans offered by Aetna and a plan offered by Kaiser Permanente.

Dental Insurance
The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners offers two dental plans from Delta Dental:

  • Base $1,000 Plan
  • Buy-Up $1,500 Plan

Vision Insurance
The vision plan offered by Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is administered by Aetna and will offer office visit copays for exams, as well as copays for lenses, frames, and contacts.

Basic Life & AD&D Insurance
The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners recognizes the importance of basic life insurance for all of its employees. The Board provides term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) protection for each full-time employee. This is a County-paid benefit.

Disability Insurance – Short Term and Long Term
100% paid by Forsyth County. Eligibility begins date of hire.

Short Term Disability – 60% of weekly earnings to a maximum of $1,000.00 a week. Eligibility begins 14 days after an accident or sickness and has a benefit period of 24 weeks.

Long Term Disability – 60% of monthly earnings to a maximum of $5,000.00 a month. Eligibility begins at 26 weeks to coordinate with the end of Short Term benefits and continues 24 months (Own Occupation).

Additional Life Insurance and AD&D
Rates vary based on amount of coverage selected. Additional life insurance may be purchased for employee, spouse, and children.

Retirement Plan (401K)

Fully vested at five years of employment – 20% graduated vesting annually. Eligible to begin contributions immediately upon hire.

6 mos to 3 yrs – County matches 100% of a max 5% of employee gross contributions

3 yrs to 10 yrs – County contributes 5% of base salary & County matches 100% of a max of 5% of gross employee contributions

Over 10 yrs – County contributes 5% base & County matches 100% of a max of 5% of gross employee contributions & County matches 50% of next 5% of gross employee contributions
