The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation is the only six-time national Gold Medal winner for excellence in parks and recreation management in the nation. The Department of Parks and Recreation provides comprehensive parks and recreation programs, facilities, and services which respond to changing needs within our communities.
The Northern Recreation and Leisure Services Division is currently seeking an experienced and talented Recreational Specialist III who will be responsible for implementing cultural, recreational, and special events. The individual will handle the oversight for Xtreme Teen program special events year-round.
Please note the above salary range indicates earning potential for this position. The budgeted salary range is $55,958 – $77,532. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Examples of Important Duties
- Create, coordinate and market Xtreme Teen program special events year-round. Manage assigned budget, coordinate vendors and entertainers, prepare purchasing requests, supervise staff, communicate with other Divisions for event support and keep community centers informed.
- Provide necessary support including but not limited to Divisional community centers activities, programs and events related to the Xtreme Teen program. Also provide Departmental support when requested.
- Serve as Division liaison for the Department’s Teen Task Force. Maintain open communication between Division community centers and Committee, including but not limited to, collect information, staff support and event coordination.
- Serve as Division liaison to the Cotillion committee. Collect necessary information, find candidates for the program, serve in program’s sub-committee. Support the program activities, practices, events, and trips.
- Support the Xtreme Teen program with marketing through social media, flyers and/or website.
- Coordinate, manage, promote Divisional Xtreme Teen program special events. Prepare event program, coordination of vendors, entertainers, staff schedule, budget and marketing.
- Oversee College Park Youth Services after care program day to day operations. Process and approve staff timecards and provide necessary supplies. Hire, supervise and train staff, ensuring staff have necessary training certifications. Maintain State and local after care licensing credentials, certifications and renew license annually. Coordinate the usage, maintenance of the building and maintain open communication with City of College Park Director of Youth, Family and Senior Services. Manage center’s accounting unit and manage budget.
- Oversee Division Summer Teen Playgrounds. Hire, supervise and train staff. Provide necessary supplies and equipment to all sites. Coordinate summer trainings, process hiring and/or renewal paperwork, process and approve timecards, coordinate trip transportation, and monitor background staff submissions.
- Serve in Divisional and Departmental committees.
- Serve as a backup to Area Specialist and other Recreation Specialist. Learn through cross training other Unit 1 member’s duties and responsibilities to provide coverage when member is out.
- Submit accurate budget projections, cost recovery worksheet, and monitor revenues and expenditures for all event budgets.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation or related field, and four years of related experience, or
2. An equivalent combination of education and experience,
3. Valid Maryland driver’s license or the ability to acquire one.
