Under the direction of the Director of Sports Programs, the Assistant Director of Sports is responsible for assisting in the administration, supervision and operation of the Sports Department, and offers safe, up-to-date programming and facilities that meet the needs of the members, participants, and the community.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- Salary Range: $44 – 50K based on experience and education

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sports: Supervise the development and delivery of quality youth, teen and adult sport programs. Responsible for supporting the development, planning, implementation and delivery of the new and existing programs including basketball leagues, t-ball leagues, including offsite afterschool programs and sports camps/clinics. Coach classes and programs as needed. The Assistant Director – Sports Programs will be responsible for assisting in the hiring, supervision and training of department staff. In addition, the Assistant Director – Sports Programs will assist with the supervision and administration of all sports class/league programs and work with key sports staff and the Sports Supervisor(s) to enhance and expand league programming and enrollment. Oversee the gym scheduling calendar, coordinating times for member and program usage.
- Camp: Assist in overseeing the summer sports camp in facets including the staffing, program content, and delivery of services.
- Other Programs: Responsible for delivering sports services and assisting with the fitness area, overall exercise equipment, and facility maintenance and cleanliness. Assist with the Devilfish Swim Team Dryland Conditioning Program and Flyers Track Program.
BUDGET: Assist in the development, administration, and oversight of the Sports Department budget in all facets to ensure the financial health of the department. Review daily CCC cash history reports and monthly P&L reports to ensure the department remains on track throughout the year.
PERSONNEL: Assist in the leadership, development, oversight and supervision of the sports staff and volunteers. Maintain full/complete staffing within the Westfield Area YMCA’s budgetary guidelines. Provide supervision and leadership to assigned staff including but not limited to, appraisals, scheduling and payroll. Responsible for administration and tracking of subordinate staff certification compliance. Responsible for the hiring process and the onboarding of all sports department staff and volunteers. Complete all staff and volunteer paperwork in accordance with Human Resources standards, train, and supervise all department related interns.
EQUIPMENT: Keep current with new trends in sports. Evaluate existing sports equipment and make recommendations for new equipment when replacing or supplementing equipment. Monitor and maintain all sports-related equipment including ordering supplies and parts for appropriate equipment, including the annual Rockwall inspection and staff training.
ADMINISTRATIVE: Attend and participate in all mandatory Committee meetings. Participate on the Physical Committee as requested. Work to complete all program related action steps of the current Strategic Plan, department related grants, Annual Support requirements and association initiatives.
TRAININGS/STAFF MEETINGS: Keep abreast of current trends in the sports field. Expand, develop and constantly update sports program(s) as trends, members and facilities demand. Attend YMCA trainings, sports and fitness-related trainings and share knowledge with the sports and fitness staff. Attend and participate in staff meetings and all mandatory trainings (Blood Borne Pathogen, Child Abuse Prevention, New Staff Orientation, etc.) within the specified timeframes and ensure adherence by department staff to these requirements.
RISK/FACILITY MANAGEMENT: All Staff are responsible for assuring the safety of YMCA members/participants and for the care, maintenance and safety of all YMCA facility/program environments. In addition, all staff is required to report accidents/incidents/emergencies, in accordance with Westfield Area YMCA standard operating policy
within 24-hours to the Executive Director, Risk Manager and/or designee. Staff must also adhere to YMCA confidentiality requirements related to all reported incidents.
OTHER FUNCTIONS: Keep the Director – Sports Programs informed of parent, participant and staff/volunteer concerns and occurrences. Fulfill any other responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President of Operations or designee.
END RESULT: Under the direction of the Director – Sports Programs, the Assistant Director – Sports Programs will offer safe and up-to-date programming and facilities that meet the needs of the members, participants and the community. The effectiveness of the Assistant Director – Sports Programs is measured by: the degree to which there is a steady growth in the number of members, and member retention, sports class/league and program participants, sound administration of assigned departments, an outstanding safety record, good public relations, sound financial position, good records and high staff morale.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred or equivalent experience required; at least three years of which must be in programming for youth.
- Minimum of three years supervisory experience preferred.
- Certifications in BLS or CPR Pro/Basic First Aid/with AED/O2 required within 30 days of hire.
- Knowledgeable in sports equipment management and its theories.
- Must be able to conduct rigorous sports and lift weight equipment.
- Creativity, initiative, flexibility and strong communication skills are also essential.
