Overview

Under direction, makes minor and major mechanical repairs on a variety of gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment and performs welding in the repair, modification, and fabrication of equipment and facilities; and performs related duties as required.

This role will pay a salary of $18 to $20.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and repairs mechanical defects in on all mechanical equipment; tears down motors and makes
    general overhauls; repairs transmissions, inboard and outboard motors, differentials, distributors, fuel pumps,
    carburetors, steering gear, starters, universal joints, and hydraulic systems; aligns wheels; tunes engines; and
    makes electrical repairs on equipment.
  • Fabricates and alters special construction equipment; designs, lays out, repairs or fabricates, with or without
    blueprints, a variety of metal work ranging from small items to construction equipment to ornamental iron work;
    cuts, fits, and welds metal, using gas and electric welding equipment; and does brazing and soldering.
  • Maintains inventory and stock of spare parts; maintains work records of equipment repair and servicing; and
    maintains equipment safety records.
  • Trains subordinates and other employees in safety practices and in the routine and preventive maintenance of
    equipment; and in the absence of the supervisor, supervises subordinates performing routine mechanical and
    welding duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Two years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair plus one year of welding experience; or, equivalent combination of training, education, or experience that would provide the required knowledge and
    abilities.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: the operation, repair, and preventive maintenance of light and heavy gasoline- and diesel-powered construction equipment and automotive apparatus; equipment and tools used in making all types of
mechanical repairs; tools and methods of the welding trade, including brazing, soldering, electrical, and arc
welding; and mechanical and welding safety practices.
Ability to: perform maintenance and mechanical repairs on a variety of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles
and equipment; design, fabricate and repair a variety of metal work; read, interpret, and work from blueprints
and technical manuals; maintain simple records; estimate costs and materials; order parts and maintain an
inventory; lead and train others; and work cooperatively with others.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid driver’s license required.

While performing the responsibilities of the Mechanic, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger,
handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must
frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is constantly required to exert various types of physical
exertion, such as prolonged reaching, bending, kneeling, and lifting. Vision abilities required by this job include close
vision.

The Mechanic works in indoor and outdoor work settings with mild to adverse exposure to environmental hazards.
The incumbent must be able to climb stairs and ladders and walk long distances to access all areas of the facility. The
noise level in the work environment is usually mild to loud. Incumbents in this position work in varying settings and will
be subject to noise and atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odor, dust, etc.
