General Statement of Duties

Performs semi-skilled maintenance and construction activities for a wide variety of City facilities, grounds, and commercial buildings. This is an entry-level position.

Performs general facilities maintenance and repair duties in and around city buildings. Duties include:

  • Inspecting buildings and facilities for needed maintenance and repairs
  • Responding to minor maintenance service calls
  • Performing preventative maintenance on facilities systems
  • Installing or repairing various facilities infrastructure components

Assists in grounds maintenance and services around city buildings, including graffiti abatement.

Performs fire & life safety system checks.

Restocks consumable supplies at the various facility locations.

Assists with moving and shipping of office furniture.

Assists with remodels of office and/or interior spaces.

Operates a variety of hand and power tools, and a Facilities Division vehicle. Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to supervisor; clean equipment.

Keeps shop and storeroom clean and orderly.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials involved in minor building construction, maintenance and repair, including basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing/boilers, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), concrete, carpentry/framing.
  2. Knowledge of the rules of safe operation of equipment and the precautions to be taken in order to avoid accidents.
  3. Ability to read instructions and blueprints.
  4. Must be able to work flexible hours. May have to respond to after-hours emergency calls.
  5. Ability to maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
  6. Ability to communicate well and interact respectfully with other City employees.
  7. Ability to work closely with others and across departments, but also work alone at a worksite, under supervisory direction while performing duties thoroughly and accurately, in accordance with Department policy.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Sufficient education to ensure the ability to understand complex oral and written instructions; high school graduate or GED preferred.
  2. One year of experience in construction or building maintenance is required.
  3. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which the ability to perform the work may be substituted for the above.

Special Qualifications

  1. Must possess a valid Oregon driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
  2. Must pass criminal background check necessary to obtain Criminal Justice Information System clearance (clearance must be maintained throughout employment).
