Position Summary

Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy seeks a digital content specialist to develop and review content for the institute’s website, digital communications and social media platforms. Under the supervision of the institute’s managing editor, the digital content specialist will work closely with the institute’s administrative and research staff to write, edit, curate and/or publish content for institute’s digital platforms.

The ideal candidate will possess strong writing, editing and visual communications skills and an interest in current events and public policy.

The institute collaborates with experts from academia, government, the media, business, and nongovernmental and private organizations.

This position offers a flexible work schedule (minimum of 1 day in the office per week).

The expected hiring salary is between $45,000 and $50,000, contingent upon qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
    • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
  • No experience is required

Skills

  • Strong verbal, visual and written communications skills
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and content strategy, with an eye towards new and emerging trends
  • Ability to take direction, work independently and to meet expected deadlines and schedules

Essential Functions

  • Assists in the writing, design, and production of digital content related to the Institute’s policy research
  • Assists in creating and disseminating content on the Institute’s social media, podcast and email platforms
  • Assists in the design, development and management of web content
  • Participates in the development of the digital communication and brand strategy for the Baker Institute
  • Works in close collaboration with members of the communications team, as well research and administrative staff
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Preferences

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism or related field
  • One or more years of experience in a relevant role
  • Understanding of the principles, terminology, procedures, and best practices of
  • communications, public relations, and editorial content
  • Ability to edit content for form, content, style, and organization
  • Familiarity with AP style
  • Ability to execute work with high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • Experience with online software applications such as Blackbaud CRM/Blackbaud Internet Solutions, WordPress, Sprout and Asana
  • Basic knowledge of HTML
